Softball Walks Off to Defeat Iona

Late Heroics Complete Comeback for Red Foxes to Advance in MAAC Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Marist softball came away with a walk-off 2-1 victory over Iona to advance in the MAAC Championships. The Gaels led until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh, when the Red Foxes scored two runs in a span of three batters to earn the victory.
 
SUMMARY
  • Calista Phippen pitched three perfect innings to start the game, striking out six of the first nine batters faced.
  • Iona scored an unearned run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Gaels' Kara Zazzaro tossed five perfect innings before the Red Foxes reached base with a Morgan Gianelle single.
  • Zazzaro retired the first two batters she faced in the seventh, but Claire Oberdorf came up huge with a homer to center field to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Kaley Coltrain reached base with a single to left field, and then Gianelle hit a ground ball that was thrown away, which allowed Coltrain to score from first and give the Red Foxes a 2-1 walk-off victory.
KEY STATS
  • Phippen tossed a complete game and struck out nine. She gave up just two hits and one walk in seven innings. She improved to 19-4 on the season.
  • Claire Oberdorf went 1-for-3 with the home run.
  • Kaley Coltrain and Hunter Hand each recorded a hit as well. Hand had Marist's only walk of the day.
  • For Iona, Zazzaro allowed just three hits in 6.2 innings and struck out five.
UP NEXT
  • Marist faces Monmouth in the next round of the MAAC Championships. The Hawks defeated Siena 11-1 earlier on Thursday afternoon.
