Marist Athletics 2018-19 Year-In-Review

Student-Athletes, Teams Enjoyed Success In Competition & In The Classroom

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – In 2018-19, Marist student-athletes and teams enjoyed success in competition and in the classroom. A closer look at highlights from this past year:
 
MAAC champions
  • Men's lacrosse
  • Women's rowing
 
NCAA championships
  • Men's lacrosse hosted opening round game – largest opening round attendance in NCAA Tournament history (2,134).
  • Women's rowing traveled to Indianapolis for second NCAA berth in program history.
 
Individual Success
  • Juston Christian, football – program records for career receiving touchdowns, single-games & career receiving yards, named All-American
  • Hailey Wagner, women's lacrosse – named All-American, holds all program records for draw controls, finished career second in NCAA history.
  • Samantha Mehalick, women's lacrosse – set program's single-game, single-season & career records for goals, as well as MAAC single season records.
  • Frankie Gregoire, baseball – program record for home runs.
  • Calista Phippen, softball – named NFCA Top 25 Freshman & MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year.
  • Rebekah Hand, women's basketball – became first player in NCAA history to have two made free throw streaks of more than 50 in her career.
  • Raislan Aiken (men's swimming & diving) and Esabelle Gervasio (women's swimming & diving) - both named ECAC Divers of the Meet. Aiken and Gervasio each captured wins in the both the 1- and 3-meter dives at the event
  • Peyton Smith, men's lacrosse – named MAAC Face-off Specialist of the Year.
  • Ryan Funk, men's basketball – Sixth Man of the Year.
  • The following individual track & field records fell: Debbie Boerke (500, indoors & 400 hurdles, outdoors); Gianna Mastromatteo (1,000 indoors & 1,500 outdoors); Drew Burns (1,000, indoors).
  • Leigh Howard (women's soccer), Keegan Wilkinson (men's lacrosse), Joe Ausanio (softball), Tom Sanford (women's rowing) were named MAAC Coaches of the Year.
 
Team Success
  • Men's basketball won Samson Bracket of Belfast Classic for first in-season tournament victory since 2006, and first away from home since 1984.
  • Men's soccer had best winning percentage in MAAC play in 20 years.
  • Men's rowing varsity 4 placed eighth at IRAs. Team spent the entire regular season ranked in the nation's top 25.
  • Men's lacrosse & softball won MAAC regular-season titles.
  • Water polo was ranked in the top 25 throughout the regular season.
  • Men's 4X800 relay (Brian Henderson, James Moehringer, Drew Burns, Christopher Tibbets) won MAAC outdoor championship, and men's distance medley relay (Tibbets, Josh Hindle, Brian Henderson, and Moehringer) won the MAAC indoor championship.
 
Excellence In Academics
  • Daniel Knoll, men's swimming & diving – became first Marist student-athlete to earn Fulbright scholarship.
  • Hailey Wagner of women's lacrosse was named Marist's 18th Academic All-American in school history.
  • Eight student-athletes (Michael Lorello, men's soccer; Jillian Colucci, women's soccer; Brandi Coon, softball; Hailey Wagner, women's lacrosse; Drew Burns; men's cross country/track & field; Christopher Rivas; men's cross country/track & field; Michael Kennedy, men's cross country/track & field; Hayley Collins, women's cross country/track & field) were named Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District.
  • Bea Bradford (women's rowing), Max Darrington (men's tennis), & Alex Marinelli (baseball) honored at Baccalaureate Ceremony.
  • Marist earned seven NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards – men's tennis, volleyball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's track & field.
  • 22 of 23 teams ended the year with cumulative grade-point averages of at least 3.0.
 
Senior Awards Banquet
  • Frankie Gregoire (baseball) & Hailey Wagner (women's lacrosse) named Sportspeople of the Year.
  • Hailey Wagner (women's lacrosse) & Max Darrington (men's tennis) won President's Academic Achievement Award.
  • Grace Casolo (women's swimming & diving) & Ross Lippe (men's swimming & diving) won Pizzani Award.
  • Kevin McKendry (men's lacrosse) & Maura Fitzpatrick (women's basketball) won Individual Strength & Conditioning Award.
  • Men's tennis & women's cross country captured the Athletic Director's Award.
  • Men's lacrosse and women's soccer won the Team Strength & Conditioning Award.
 
Marist In The Pros
  • Jason Myers – named to Pro Bowl, signed multi-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks.
  • Three Marist men's lacrosse alumni – Mike Begley, Brian Corrigan, and current assistant coach J.D. Recor – made opening-day roster of the New York Lizards.
  • Kevin McCarthy is in his fourth season with the Kansas City Royals, and made the opening-day roster for the first time.
  • Ricky Pacione is in his sixth season as a bullpen catcher for the Cleveland Indians.
 
Red Fox Network
  • Produced 44 ESPN broadcasts (volleyball, men's & women's basketball, conference championships in men's lacrosse, water polo, and softball, NCAA Tournament game in men's lacrosse).
  • Meet The Foxes named national finalist for Sports Video Group/NACDA Award for the second straight year.
 
Center for Student-Athlete Enhancement
  • Again active in hosting a variety of events, including 11th annual White Ribbon campaign, Hunger Walk, LEAP Networking night, Girl Scout Sports Sampler, and Special Olympics.
  • Hosted Rise Together panel.
  • Hosted speech by Kate Fagan
  • In conjunction with Brenda Tracy, hosted Set The Expectation game when football hosted Davidson on Oct. 20.
  • Three student-athletes (Amanda Guy, women's rowing; Jordan Jones, men's basketball; Randy Taveras, baseball) attended Black Student-Athlete Summit at the University of Texas.
  • Hosted FOXPYs for second straight year.
 
Red Fox Club
  • Hosted Red Fox Club Barbecue in early September to kick off basketball season.
  • Hosted 37th annual golf outing on May 31, which was attended by nearly 140 golfers.
