EDISON, New Jersey – Marist Women's Lacrosse alumna
Hailey Wagner was selected as the 2018-19 MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Wagner, who earned an honorable mention for last year's award, becomes the fifth female Marist student-athlete, sixth overall Red Fox, and the first to garner the recognition since Katie Conard, '13 received the honor in 2013. The MAAC Student-Athlete of the Year has been awarded since the 2001-02 academic year.
Â
To be eligible for the MAAC Student-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at a full-time MAAC member institution, compete in a sport sponsored by the MAAC, and completed one full academic year at the institution. The student-athlete must also have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale and be a significant starter or reserve for his/her team(s).
Â
The conference selects one female and one male out of 11 nominees, one each from the school members. Johannes Motschmann of Iona College was tabbed as the Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Â
"We are thrilled that Hailey has earned this prestigious award from the MAAC. As a two-time NCAA Division I statistical leader in draw controls, an Academic All-American, and a President's Academic Achievement Award winner, Hailey is an outstanding role model for Marist student-athletes. She has achieved at the highest level, both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field." –
Director of Athletics Tim Murray

"I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of this great honor from the MAAC. Hailey has always been in integral part of the program's success over the years, but her senior year has been one she should be most proud of.
"As an athlete, she has the power, grit and intuition to win games and to help those around her succeed. Her work ethic is unmatched, and she stops at nothing to perfect her game, which has helped her obtain NCAA recognition in multiple seasons. As a teammate, I know she brings a sense of leadership and camaraderie needed for the program to thrive, something I know will be carried for many seasons to come here at Marist.
"Hailey works just as hard in the classroom as she does on the field, earning an almost perfect 4.0 while taking on a challenging major such as Biomedical Science. Her passion for both athletics and academics makes earning the MAAC Student-Athlete of the Year award very special."
– Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Jessica Wilkinson '08

"I have been a Marist faculty member since 2008. It is not very often that you get the pleasure to advise and work with a student like Hailey. She is the definition of an honors student -- she is a leader among her peers, and she sought out an education that is broader, deeper, and more complex.
"Since 2015 I have been her professor, her adviser, and I have helped her navigate high-impact practices and undergraduate research with faculty mentors. Hailey is, without a doubt, intelligent and diligent. She has excelled at her major, and she has completed a liberal arts curriculum that asked her to contemplate both enduring questions about herself and the nature of reality, as well as pressing social and political challenges we face today.
"But this does not really capture what is unique about her. In addition to strong academics, Hailey has a sound moral compass, and that's evident in everything she does, both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field. For her honors research projects, Hailey examined topics related to the well-being of her fellow student-athletes. She worked on advanced research projects on both nutrition and burnout among Division I athletes. Through her research, she sought to better understand her peers and to improve the conditions under which they compete and learn.
"Thus, she is a leader among her peers. All the while, she has shown great resilience and grit, and she has never let anything stand in her way. I am exceptionally proud to have worked with Hailey for the last four years, and I look forward to the great things she will accomplish in the future."
– Marist College Honors Program Director Dr. James G. Snyder

"Throughout Hailey's time at Marist College and competing on the women's lacrosse team, she has shown a dedication to achieving success both in the classroom, with a focus in a difficult curriculum, and on the playing field. Her many athletic accolades, compounded with her academic success, is a great representation of a student-athlete competing in the MAAC."
