Football Hosts Cornell On Homecoming & Reunion Weekend

Red Foxes Seeking Second Straight Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team (1-1) returns to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes face Cornell (0-0) in its second of three straight home games on Homecoming & Reunion Weekend. Kickoff is set for noon.

  • Marist captured its home and Pioneer Football League openers with a 26-23 triumph over Stetson.
  • Marist's special teams got the Red Foxes off to a fast start, with red-shirt junior John Pierce's punt forcing a safety, and red-shirt freshman Luke Paladino tying a program record with a 49-yard field goal in the game's first two minutes.
  • A 75-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt junior Luke Strnad to fifth-year senior Anthony Olivencia gave the Red Foxes the lead for good in the fourth quarter.

  • Following last Saturday's win, Olivencia (four receptions, 150 yards, two touchdowns) was named PFL Offensive Player of the Week, and red-shirt sophomore Kyle Fleitman (10 tackles, three pass break-ups, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble) was honored as the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Both Olivencia and fifth-year senior Jon Kanda (107 yards) topped 100 yards receiving. It marked the first time two Red Foxes topped 100 yards receiving in the same game since Juston Christian and Lawrence Dickens accomplished the feat at Dayton in 2017.
  • Junior Mekhai Johnson had the second 100-yard rushing game in his career with 125 yards on 16 carries against Stetson, including a 54-yard touchdown.
  • Cornell is one of two Ivy League foes to visit Poughkeepsie this season. Marist will host Dartmouth on Oct. 19.
  • The only other Ivy League school Marist has faced is Columbia. The Red Foxes are 0-4 against the Lions all-time.

  • Cornell is beginning its 132nd season of football.
  • The Big Red were picked to finish seventh in the Ivy League Preseason Poll.
  • From last season, Cornell returns six offensive starters and eight defensive starters.
  • Head coach David Archer is in his seventh season as head coach. Archer is a 2005 Cornell graduate who served as team captain in his playing days.
