Women’s Basketball Hosts Rider In Key MAAC Contest

Both Teams Sit Atop Standings In Early Test For Red Foxes

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The top two teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference square off against each other on Thursday night as Marist Women's Basketball (4-0 MAAC, 11-2) welcomes Rider (3-0 MAAC, 10-2) to McCann Arena at 7 p.m.

  • The game is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. All faculty and staff will be admitted for free and recognized for their work during the game.
  • Thursday's contest airs on ESPN+, beginning at the top of the hour. Geoff Brault and Steve Eggink have the call.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Red Foxes ignited a 24-0 to start the game, leading to a 32-point first quarter, and program-record tying 56-point first half, and a 94-67 victory at Niagara on January 11.
  • Alana Gilmer dropped 18 points on 9-9 shooting, setting the program record for field goal percentage in a game (minimum eight makes).
  • Rebekah Hand (18 points on 8-9 shooting) and Grace Vander Weide (11 points, seven rebounds, five assists) also reached double figures.
  • Willow Duffell's seven helpers and Claire Oberdorf's eight rebounds led the Red and White.
  • Marist posted 29 assists on 40 field goals. The former is the most since February 14, 2014 against Quinnipiac.
 
SCOUTING RIDER
  • In addition to its 10-2 overall record and 3-0 conference record, the Broncs have won seven straight.
  • Most recently, Rider dispatched defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac 75-59 on January 9.
  • Preseason MAAC Player of the Year Stella Johnson paces the nation with 27.8 points per game. She has won the MAAC Player of the Week award six times this season.
  • Amari Johnson averages 12.3 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game.
  • As a team, Rider shoots 43.6 percent to the tune of 71.5 percent.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Thursday marks the 63rd meeting all-time between Marist and Rider.
  • The Red Foxes have 45 wins in the series, their most against a MAAC opponent in program history.
  • Last season, the Broncs took the two regular season affairs, but Marist defeated Rider 62-52 in the 2019 MAAC Semifinals.
  • Four Red Foxes reached double figures, paced by 14 from Hand and Vander Weide.
 
WEEKLY WINNERS
  • Gilmer racked up the weekly awards following her performances against the Golden Griffins and Purple Eagles, taking home MAAC Player of the Week honors for the week of January 13.
  • She was also selected as the MBWA Division I Player of the Week and College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week.
  • Hand earned MAAC Student-Athlete of the Week recognition on January 15.
 
NATIONAL NOTORIETY
  • The Red and White is fifth in the nation with a 1.50 assist/turnover ratio. The team's 159 turnovers this year are the sixth-fewest.
  • As a team, Marist is seventh in both field goal percentage (48.3 percent) and assists per game (19.5).
  • Vander Weide is 12th among all Division I players with 5.8 assists per game.
