Women's Basketball Clips Manhattan In The Bronx

Rebekah Hand Paces Team With 24 Points

RIVERDALE, New York - Senior captain Rebekah Hand dropped 24 points on 9-13 shooting (4-6 three-pointers) to lead Marist to a 71-66 road victory at Manhattan on Saturday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium.

The Red Foxes improve to 5-1 in MAAC play and 12-3 overall. The Jaspers now sport a 4-3 conference record, and an overall mark of 7-9.

Marist held a 35-25 halftime lead that later stretched to 12 after a layup from junior guard Allie Best. however, Manhattan cut it down to four points at the end of the third quarter for a 55-51 Red Fox lead.

Manhattan got as close as 66-63, but Rebekah Hand drilled a three-pointer to push her over the 20-point mark with 3:07 to play.

Hand recorded at least 20 points for the 30th time in her career. Best, making her second start this year, scored a season-high 10 points.

Emily LaPointe led Manhattan with 18 points.
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Marist hit the first of its eight three-pointers when Best knocked one down from the top of the key 1:32 in.
  • The Jaspers jumped out on a 9-0 run, but redshirt senior captain Alana Gilmer hit a jumper outside the paint. Marist trailed 15-14 after one.
  • Redshirt senior captain Grace Vander Weide stole the ball from Courtney Warley, and assisted on a Best transition trey to make it 17-15 to start the quarter.
  • With 6:48 left in the second, the Red Foxes went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by six points from redshirt junior forward Molly Smith.
  • The Red Foxes' largest lead came right out of halftime when junior forward Willow Duffell drained a right-wing three-pointer for a 38-25.
  • Manhattan got closer on a 9-2 run, but Marist broke the Jasper press. Vander Weide burst through the paint for a layup to make it 42-34 with 6:45 left in the third.
  • On the next possession, Duffell found Rebekah Hand on a backdoor cut, giving Hand 10 points on the day.
  • Sydney Watkins of Manhattan hit a three at the end of the third, handing Marist a 55-51 edge.
  • Sixteen seconds into the fourth, the Jaspers cut it to three, but Marist hit four of the game's next five baskets, highlighted by a Rebekah Hand corner three for a 64-54 lead at the 6:47 mark.
STATS
  • Ten of Rebekah Hand's 24 points came in the fourth quarter.
  • Vander Weide posted 12 points and nine assists.
  • Gilmer added 11 points for her 12th-straight game in double figures.
  • Duffell led the Red Foxes with 10 rebounds, her second-consecutive game achieving at least 10 boards. She also had seven points and five assists.
  • Marist shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, and recorded 23 assists on 28 field goals.
  • The Red Foxes also out-rebounded the Jaspers 35-32.
NOTES
  • Vander Weide moved into seventh place all-time in program history, passing Casey Dulin. She now has 349 Marist assists.
  • Gilmer also surpassed Lynne Griffin and now sits eighth all-time with 492 Marist field goals.
  • Best notched 10 points for the first time since January 3, 2019 against Niagara.
  • Rebekah Hand now has 30 career games with 20 or more points, and 95 career contests with 10 or more points.
  • Marist has now won seven-straight against Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium, and has not lost in the Bronx since 2012.
  • The all-time series now stands at 35-24 in favor of the Red and White.
