Grace Vander Weide added double-doubles, and Marist shot 54.7 percent from the field to defeat Canisius 90-59 on Thursday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The Red Foxes win their fifth-straight, and improve to a 3-0 MAAC record and 10-2 overall. The Golden Griffins drop to 1-2 in conference play and 2-10 overall.
Marist rode a hot start offensively, scoring 25 points on 64 percent shooting in the first quarter. Gilmer and
Rebekah Hand combined for 15 points, including a nifty feed where the latter tapped a lead pass from Vander Weide to Gilmer for an open layup.
Rebekah Hand recorded 18 points on 7-12 shooting, 10 rebounds, and five first-half assists. Vander Weide totaled 13 points, 10 assists, and zero turnovers.
Danielle Sanderlin paced Canisius with 15 points, while D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks was held below her season average with 10 points.
- The first quarter featured five Marist triples; two came from Rebekah Hand, while Gilmer, Vander Weide, and sophomore guard Kendall Krick each had one.
- With less than 2:30 to play in the first, freshman guard Trinasia Kennedy dished off to freshman forward Samantha Bailey, who is from nearby Grand Island, NY, for a right-handed layup off the glass. Kennedy later hit two foul shots to put the Red Foxes up seven at the end of the quarter.
- Two minutes into the second, junior guard Allie Best gained space on a crossover and drained a right-elbow jumper for a 27-20 Marist advantage.
- Junior forward Willow Duffell hit a three-pointer with 4:35 until halftime to extend the lead to 36-24.
- At the 2:20 mark, Vander Weide bid her time and launched a straightaway triple to make it 41-27.
- Marist scored the first 10 points of the second half, all of which came via the captains.
- Sophomore guard Sarah Barcello collected the lob pass from Vander Weide to cap an extended 17-3 run from the second quarter to the 6:06 mark of the third.
- Five-straight from Rebekah Hand before the fourth quarter media timeout made it 78-52 Red Foxes.
- The Red and White reached 90 points at the end as Bailey and freshman guard Julianna Bonilla teamed up for six points in the final 1:21.
- Marist went 35-64 from the field, and was 13-25 (52 percent) from beyond the arc.
- The Red Foxes totaled a season-best 28 assists just one game after setting the pace against Saint Peter's.
- Eleven steals also marks a season-best for the Red and White.
- Marist had the rebounding edge, 34-27.
- Gilmer also added seven rebounds, being one of three Red Foxes to record six more more (Rebekah Hand – 10, Duffell – 6).
- Vander Weide was a team-best +29 on the floor. This was her second game of the season with 10 assists and her fourth double-double in 2019-20 (fifth-career).
- Rebekah Hand's double-double was her third of the season and 14th in her career. She has 16 career double-digit rebound games.
- Twelve Red Foxes played at least eight minutes.
- With 10 made field goals, Gilmer passes Stephanie Del Preore for ninth place all-time. She now has 469 baskets in a Marist uniform.
- Vander Weide hurdles over Corielle Yarde for eighth all-time with 317 Marist assists.
- Rebekah Hand is now the Red Foxes' ninth all-time leader in rebounds with 675. She surpasses Diesa Seidel.
- For the first time in the Brian Giorgis era, Marist has reached 90 points in consecutive games.
- Marist has shot 50 percent or better in every MAAC game this year.
- The Red and White is 3-0 to begin MAAC play for the second time in three years.
- Marist's 10-2 record is the fastest mark to double-digit wins (12 games) since the 2010-11 season.
- The Red Foxes have won eight straight over the Golden Griffins, improving to 39-14 all-time. Marist has won 22 of its last 23 contests over Canisius.
