Marist Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight

Five Foxes Reach Double Figures Against UAlbany

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Freshman forward Caitlin Weimar recorded her first-career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, classmate Zaria Demember-Shazer notched a career-high with 14 points, and Marist powered its way to a 67-48 triumph over UAlbany in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at McCann Arena.

The Red Foxes won their fourth consecutive game to open the season, and 16th in a row dating back to last season. The Great Danes drop to 1-2 on the year.

Junior guard Sarah Barcello chipped in 13 points for her fourth straight game in double figures. Senior captain Willow Duffell and sophomore guard Trinasia Kennedy added 10 points each to give Marist five players with 10 or more points for the first time since January 4th, 2020 vs. Saint Peter's.

Ellen Hahne paced the Great Danes with 12 points, while Lucia Decortes had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Highlights
  • Both teams struggled to facilitate offense early on, creating seven turnovers combined before the first media timeout.
  • Kennedy had Marist's first bucket at the 7:07 mark of the first, 13 seconds after UAlbany had its first basket.
  • After a 5-0 run put the Great Danes up 10-5, the Red Foxes got to within one on scores from Barcello and Weimar, but Helene Haegerstrand's straightaway three put the visitors ahead 13-9 after one.
  • Weimar tied the score at 13 with two layups in the opening minutes of the second, leading to a UAlbany timeout.
  • With the score tied at 17, freshman guard Anabel Ellison zipped a pass to Kennedy on the left block, who went off glass for two and picked up a foul, completing the three-point play to make 20-17 Marist with 3:46 until halftime.
  • That play sparked a 10-2 run for the Red Foxes, which included threes from Barcello and Demember-Shazer. They helped Marist nurse a 27-23 edge into the break.
  • The Red Foxes ignited an 11-4 burst to open the third, as Barcello notched five points, while Duffell, Weimar, and Demember-Shazer provided points.
  • Junior guard Kendall Krick entered the contest and had back-to-back layups preceding a Demember-Shazer jumper, increasing the advantage to 46-29 with 2:11 left in the third.
  • The closes UAlbany would get to Marist in the fourth quarter was 16 with 5:11 to play, but Barcello capitalized on a layup 41 seconds later.
  • A 6-0 Red Fox run within 32 seconds put the game to bed, as Kennedy, Duffell, and Krick converted layups with more than three minutes to go.
