Baseball Outlasts South Florida in Season Opener

Red Foxes Top Bulls After 12 Competitive Innings

TAMPA, Florida – Marist outlasted South Florida in the season opener by a score of 6-4, going to extra innings on cool night at Red McEwen field.

The Red Foxes were propelled to victory by sophomore Brian Hart (3-for-5) who tallied four RBIs in three hits, while junior starter Alex Pansini allowd just two hits over six innings.
SUMMARY
  • The Red Foxes took a 3-0 lead in the third, when Matt Rubayo and Brian Hart connected on consecutive at-bats with an RBI single and a 2-RBI double respectively.
  • Donnie Stone extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth with an RBI-single up the middle to score Rubayo.
  • The Bulls did not score until the seventh, when they recorded two runs to cut the deficit in half.
  • In the ninth, USF's Alex Bello scored on an error, and teammate Jake Sullivan was clutch with an RBI single to send the game to extra innings.
  • The game remained at a stalemate until the 12th inning when Hart rose to the occasion once again with a single to first base to drive in Tyler Kapuscinski and Reece Armitage.
  • Nick Cantone took the rubber in the bottom of the inning and closed out the game for the save. Zane Kmietek earned the win with his two innings of work in the 10th and 11th.
STATS
  • For the day, Hart went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and a walk.
  • Seven Red Foxes recorded hits, with Rubayo and Stone recording RBIs. Reece Armitage, Tyler Kapuscinski and Rubayo each hit twice.
  • Pansini threw for 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just two hits.
  • Ryan Cardona struck out eight in 3.0 innings while allowing four hits and two earned runs.
  • Zane Kmietek earned the win with just one hit in 2.0 innings, while Nick Cantone got the save with his two strikeouts in the 12th.
