Red Foxes Hope to Find Offensive Rhythm Against Colonials

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Marist baseball heads to the nation's capital to compete in a series of games at George Washington, which will begin on Friday, February 21 and continue through the weekend. The Red Foxes are coming off of a successful series in which they won a game on the road at a talented South Florida squad, and took the Bulls to the limit in the other two matchups.

  • Brian Hart (3-for-5, 4 RBIs, 3H) and Alex Pansini (6.0 IP, 2H, 0R, 7 SO) led Marist to victory in the first game.
  • Erubiel Candelario threw for seven innings in the second and struck out eight, while Reece Armitage went 3-for-4 and led the offense as five Red Foxes secured hits.

FIRST SERIES IN REVIEW
"I thought we pitched really well. Our starters were better than we could have ever hoped for," reflected Tyler Kapuscinski. "Offensively, our stats might not show it but I believe we outplayed South Florida by a long shot. We were hitting well against some really great pitchers, but just never got that big hit with runners in scoring position."

Tyler Kapuscinski's 2019 was the best season of his career, in which he led the MAAC in batting average and earned First Team All-MAAC and Second Team All-Northeast honors. While he may not have had the start to 2020 he desired, the Preseason All-MAAC selection knows what to work on for George Washington.

"Our focus this week has been on strengthening our two-strike approach. We want to minimize our strikeouts, get the ball in play and make things happen," pronounced Kapuscinski. "If our pitching stays consistent and we improve our hitting, we'll be in a great spot."
HISTORY VS. GW
  • Marist last matched up against George Washingon in 2011 for a weekend series, which the Red Foxes dominated.
  • The Red Foxes swept the Colonials in all three games (17-9, 10-5, 19-1).
  • In the finale, redshirt-senior Bryce Nugent secured his fourth home run of the season.
  • Alongside Nugent, freshman Jon Schwind scored a team-high five runs.
  • Marist is 8-3 against GW since 2004.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
  • George Washington is currently 2-1 overall, most recently taking victory over Georgetown, 3-2, on Feb. 18.
  • Elliott Raimo had a strong debut on the mound, pitching for four innings, only giving up one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
  • Keagan McGinnis recorded four of his six outs by way of strikeout, which brought him to 11 strikeouts in 4.1 innings this season.
