Women's Basketball Beats Saint Peter's In Jersey

Rebekah Hand Scores 26 As Marist Earns 10th Road Win

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey - Senior captain Rebekah Hand scored 26 points, redshirt senior captain Alana Gilmer added 20 points and six rebounds, and Marist outscored Saint Peter's 42-23 in the second half to take an 82-60 win on Thursday evening from the Yanitelli Center.

The Red Foxes boost their winning streak to seven games and their MAAC record to 14-2, along with a 21-4 record. The Peacocks drop to 5-11 in MAAC play and 8-17 overall.

Redshirt senior captain Grace Vander Weide totaled 14 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while junior forward Willow Duffell posted 12 points and seven boards. 

Briyanah Richardson paced Saint Peter's with 20 points.
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Saint Peter's notched the first two baskets, but Marist answered with a 12-0 run over the course of 2:36 in the early moments.
  • Holding a 12-10 lead, junior guard Allie Best checked in and drained a right-wing three-pointer at the 3:29 mark of the first quarter.
  • Marist capped the opening stanza on an 8-0 run, with five points from Rebekah Hand and a triple from junior forward Molly Smith.
  • The Red Foxes built the lead to 27-18 within the first minute of the second as Gilmer's midrange jumper pinballed in.
  • At the midway point, Saint Peter's rocketed off a 10-2 burst to take a 37-36 lead off a Wil'lisha Jackson bucket.
  • Holding a 40-37 lead at halftime, Vander Weide started the third with a triple for a six-point advantage.
  • With 3:46 remaining in the frame, Gilmer was left open on the left wing and canned the trey to make it 54-46 Red Foxes.
  • Redshirt junior forward Molly Smith and Rebekah Hand drilled triples as a 10-3 Marist spurt gave the visitors a 64-51 cushion after three quarters.
  • Three minutes into the fourth, Best zipped a pass to a wide open Duffell underneath the hoop to push Marist's lead to 71-55, forcing a Peacocks timeout.
  • Gilmer reached 20 points and put the Red and White up 20, 80-60, with another left wing triple as 2:45 remained in the game.
 
STATS
  • As a team, Marist shot 50.9 percent from the field, including a season-best 54.5 percent (12-22) from downtown.
  • After hitting 14 of their first 29 shots, the Peacocks were limited to 8-31 shooting in the second half, and 2-16 in the final period.
  • Twelve of Rebekah Hand's 26 points came in the first quarter, and nine in the third. She was 8-8 from the foul line.
  • Vander Weide's eight boards and five assists led the team. She drained three triples.
  • Marist eclipsed 20 assists for the 15th time this season, assisting on 20 of its 28 field goals.
  • The Red Foxes also won the rebounding battle, 36-30.
NOTES
  • Rebekah Hand now has 1,911 career points. She surpassed 20 points for the ninth time this season and the 33rd time in her career.
  • Gilmer moved into eighth place all-time with 1,437 career points, passing Charlene Fields. The North Easton, Massachusetts native put up 20 points for the 10th time in 2019-20. She's reached that feat in 32 career games.
  • Over her last 12 games, Duffell is averaging 7.7 rebounds per contest.
  • Prior to tonight, Saint Peter's had held its last six opponents under 70 points.
  • During its seven-game winning streak, Marist has hit 50.2 percent of its shots.
  • Marist has won 10 games on the road in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.
  • The Red Foxes are now 36-17 all-time against Saint Peter's, and have won six in a row. The last four wins have been by 20 or more points.
