FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The Marist softball team split a pair games at the Razorback Invitational on Saturday. The Red Foxes fell to South Dakota State, 6-2, in their first game of the day, but then earned a 9-5 triumph over Montana in their second game.
Kaley Coltrain homered in back-to-back innings in Marist's win over Montana, and finished the day with seven RBIs.
Caroline Baratta went 4-for-8 on the day, and her three-run double against Montana gave the Red Foxes the lead for good.
Marist now stands at 4-4 on the season.
- Coltrain's two-run double in the top of the first staked Marist to a 2-0 lead.
- Kelsey Lenox's two-run homer in the bottom of the first tied the game, and her two-run single in the second gave South Dakota State a 4-2 lead.
- South Dakota State then added single runs in the third and sixth.
- Marist brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but the game ended on a double play.
- For Marist, Baratta and Sam Freeland had two hits apiece. Meghan Haff started and went the first four innings, and Nicole Teague followed with two innings of relief.
- The Red Foxes committed three errors, which resulted in four unearned runs.
- For South Dakota State, Lenox finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Grace Glanzer pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.
- McKenna Tjaden's two-run homer put Montana up 2-0 in the second.
- Coltrain's solo homer cut Marist's deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but Cami Sellers homered in the top of the fifth gave Montana a two-run lead back.
- Marist struck for eight in the bottom of the fifth. Baratta's three-run double gave Marist the lead at 4-3. Three batters later, Coltrain delivered her second homer in as many innings, a grand slam.
- Montana closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth.
- Coltrain finished 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs. Baratta finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Eight different Red Foxes scored at least one run.
- Calista Phippen pitched a complete game and struck out seven.
- For Montana, Tjaden, Sellers, and Lexi Knauss finished with two hits apiece.
- Marist closes out the Razorback Invitational against #23 Arkansas on Sunday at 12:45 p.m. Eastern.
