POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team earned its 10
th straight win on Thursday night, as the Red Foxes earned a 59-47 wire-to-wire victory over Iona at McCann Arena.
The Red Foxes led by as much as 24, and withstood a furious Iona come back, as the Gaels came within four in the fourth quarter. Marist closed the game out by holding Iona to three points in the final 4:37.
Rebekah Hand led four Marist scorers in double digits with 15 points, and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
- Marist scored the game's first five points.
- The Red Foxes then held the Gaels scoreless for three separate stretches of at least two minutes in the first quarter, and led 12-5 after 10 minutes.
- A three-pointer by Rebekah Hand at the 5:12 mark of the second quarter capped an 8-0 Marist run, and forced an Iona timeout.
- Marist held Iona scoreless for the final 4:14 of the period, and scored the final nine points of the half to take a 33-13 lead to the locker room.
- Marist ran its lead to as high as 24 in the third quarter, and led 46-26 after 30 minutes.
- The Gaels scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter, which cut their deficit to 10.
- Morgan Rachu's three-pointer with 4:37 remaining sliced the Gaels' gap to 48-44.
- The Red Foxes then reeled off eight straight points, as they held the Gaels scoreless for 3:54. Iona never drew closer than nine in the final minute.
- Hand was joined in double figures by Alana Gilmer (13), Sarah Barcello (13), and Willow Duffell (10).
- Rachu led all scorers with 17. She shot 5-for-12 from three-point range. Juana Camilion added 14 for the Gaels.
- Marist held a 26-16 edge in points in the paint.
- Iona had 22 turnovers, while Marist had 16.
- This is the 13th time in program history the Red Foxes have had a winning streak of at least 10 games, and the first since the 2013-14 season.
- Marist has now held an opponent to single-digit scoring in a regulation quarter 13 times this season.
- Gilmer moved up from sixth to fourth place on the program's all-time scoring list. She now has 1,485 points as a Red Fox. Next on the all-time list is Ursula Winter (1,587).
- Hand's three-pointer at the 5:12 mark of the second quarter was the 242nd of her career, which ties Marie Fusci for second place in program history.
- Marist has now won five straight against Iona, and has won 17 of its last 19 against the Gaels in Poughkeepsie.
- Marist is now 24-4 overall, and 17-2 in the MAAC.
- Iona stands at 9-19 on the season, and is 8-11 in conference play.
- Marist closes out the regular season on Saturday against Siena at McCann Arena.
