POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's lacrosse team was outlasted by the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens on Saturday afternoon, losing by just one goal. Delaware came away with the win as a shot from
Jojo Pirreca with just two seconds left to tie the game was saved by goalkeeper Matt Deluca.
With the loss, the Red Foxes fall to an even 3-3 on the season, and 3-1 at Tenney Stadium. Meanwhile, the Fightin' Blue Hens improve to 4-1 on the year.
- Marist and Delaware traded two pairs of goals to start the game, but with eight seconds left in the quarter Jake Weinman went behind the back off a feed from Joe Tierney to put the Red Foxes in front 3-2.
- Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Weinman went no-look again, scoring his 14th goal of the season to increase Marist's lead to 4-2.
- The Fightin' Blue Hens fought to tie the score at five, but the Red Foxes scored two unanswered goals at the end of the period, from Vito Musso and James Lyons, to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
- Tierney scored the first goal of the second half, to give Marist a three-goal lead, which was its largest lead of the day.
- Delaware wouldn't quit, as the Fightin' Blue Hens used a 6-0 scoring run throughout the majority of the third quarter to re-take the lead, 11-8.
- Pirreca scored a goal with two second left in the third period to cut the deficit to just two goals.
- Delaware scored the next two goals, taking its largest lead of the day of four goals, but this time the Red Foxes were the ones who kept fightin'.
- A goal from Pirreca with 3:36 on the clock in the fourth quarter trimmed Delaware's lead to 15-14.
- The Red Foxes gained possession with 45 seconds left on the game clock trailing by one, but two shots with under 10 seconds left in the game, from Lyons and Pirreca, didn't fall, and the Fightin' Blue Hens snuck out with a 15-14 victory.
- Pirreca and Weinman each tied for a game-high four goals each. Pirreca also added an assist, a ground ball, and two caused turnovers.
- Tierney collected six total points in the game, on two goals and four assists. Lyons totaled three points, chipping in a goal and two assists.
- Peyton Smith had a game-high 16 ground balls, and went 22-32 on face-off attempts.
- Jake MacGregor had 10 saves between the pipes for Marist.
- Charlie Kitchen and Bryce Reid led the Delaware attack with a hat trick a piece. Tye Kurtz totaled six points on two goals and four assists.
- The Fightin' Blue Hens outshot Marist 43-41. However, the Red Foxes led in the shots on goal department, 28-25.
- Marist picked up 43 total ground balls in the game, while Delaware had just 43.
- Marist is now 0-5 all-time against the Fightin' Blue Hens.
- Tierney set new career-highs in the game with four assists and six points.
- Smith's 16 ground balls also marked a new career-high, besting his previous career-high 14.
- JT Roselle set a new season-high total with six ground balls. Also, with two caused turnovers, he is now just two caused turnovers away from joining the program's top-10 list.
- Pirreca matched his career-high of five points which he set three times this season.
- The Red Foxes welcome the Quinnipiac Bobcats to Tenney Stadium for both teams' 2020 MAAC opener.
- The game is set for Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
