Women’s Basketball Returns To Face Quinnipiac

Marist Rings In 2021 After 23-Win 2020.

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Completing its two-week pause to conclude the 2020 calendar year, Marist Women's Basketball opens 2021 with a two-game set against Quinnipiac on Sunday, January 3rd and Monday, January 4th at 3 p.m.

  • Marist hit over 53 percent of its shots to take down UAlbany 67-48 on Tuesday, December 15th at McCann Arena.
  • Five Red Foxes scored in double figures, led by 14 points from freshmen forwards Caitlin Weimar and Zaria DeMember-Shazer. The former posted her first-career double-double with 11 rebounds.
  • Junior guard Sarah Barcello (13 points), senior captain Willow Duffell (10 points), and sophomore guard Trinasia Kennedy (10 points) rounded out the scoring leaders.
  • Senior captain Allie Best dished out a season-high eight assists.

  • The program went on pause following the game against UAlbany, due to close contact with an official from that game that received a positive COVID-19 test.
  • As a result, the Red Foxes' non-conference game against Northeastern was canceled.
  • Marist's series at Fairfield was moved to Friday, February 26th and Saturday, February 27th, as the Stags went on pause due to contact tracing protocol from a previous game. Since then, that series was bumped to Saturday, February 13th and Sunday, February 14th.
  • The Iona series was moved up to Friday, January 15th and Saturday, January 16th.

2020 in review
  • With Marist's games against Fairfield and Northeastern rescheduled and canceled, respectively, the Red Foxes closed the 2020 calendar year with a 23-2 record.
  • Marist has not lost since January 30th, 2020. That undefeated streak from January 31st, 2020 to January 2nd, 2021 is 337 days.
  • Of those 23 victories…
    • Twenty-one were by 10 or more points.
    • The Red Foxes shot 50 percent or better in 16 of them.
    • Fifteen of them featured Marist hitting seven or more three-pointers.
 
best dishes
  • Best currently leads the NCAA with a 21.0 assist/turnover ratio.
  • She is one of just three student-athletes in Division I with just one turnover while averaging three-plus assists per game and playing in 75 percent of her games.
  • The Red Foxes have won nine games in a row when Best has five or more assists in a game.

  • After her 14-pont, 11-rebound effort vs. the Great Danes, Weimar collected her third consecutive MAAC Rookie of the Week award on December 21st.
  • She joins Rachele Fitz and Rebekah Hand as the only freshman to win MAAC Rookie of the Week three times in a row.
  • Weimar has earned the honor every week the Red Foxes have played. Marist was idle when awards were given out on November 30th and December 28th.
  • As of Friday, the rookie's 65.7 field goal percentage was 12th in the nation.

  • Quinnipiac enters the matchup at 3-3 on the season, having split its series with Manhattan for a 1-1 MAAC record.
  • The Bobcats have also beaten Big East foe Providence as well as Fordham of the A-10. They also fell to Villanova and Army, whom Marist beat 83-55 in its season opener.
  • Mikala Morris leads three Bobcats in double figures, averaging 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
  • Rose Caverly (11.5 points/game, 5.0 assists/game) and Mackenzie DeWees (10 points/game, 9.5 rebounds/game) round out Quinnipiac's leading scorers and rebounders.
  • After going 12-8 in the MAAC in 2019-20 to secure the fifth seed in the MAAC Championship, the Bobcats were picked to finish tied for second in the MAAC Preseason Poll.

  • Quinnipiac holds the series advantage at 13-6 all-time.
  • Last year, Marist swept the season series for the first time since 2013-14 with 73-60 (home) and 64-51 (road) triumphs.
  • The two programs have developed one of the premier rivalries in the conference, having faced off in the 2014, 2018, and 2019 MAAC Championships. Both teams are the only MAAC schools, men's or women's, to have reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
