Willow Duffell notched career-highs with 18 points and 17 rebounds, and four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week
Caitlin Weimar had 11 points, but Quinnipiac outlasted Marist 59-55 in overtime on Monday afternoon at the People's United Center.
The Red Foxes see their 17-game winning streak, which dated back to January 30th, 2020, end as they fall to 3-1 in MAAC play and 5-1 overall. Quinnipiac improves to 2-2 in the conference and 4-4 on the season.
Marist was able to overcome an 11-point deficit from late in the second quarter, leading by as much as four points in the fourth quarter. However, the Bobcats limited the Red Foxes to just a 14 percent clip from the field in overtime.
Mackenzie DeWees led all scorers with 20 points, while Amani Free (15 points) and Rose Caverly (13 points) also reached double figures.
The Red Foxes aim to regroup as they take on MAAC preseason favorite Manhattan from McCann Arena on Saturday, January 9th and Sunday, January 10th. Both games begin at 5 p.m.
- Marist started the game off on a 7-0 run, with buckets from Barcello and Weimar, as well as a Best three.
- Quinnipiac's first basket came 2:52 into the game, starting 1-for-8 from the field, but then took a narrow lead after a 10-2 run.
- Duffell skated down the left of the paint off an inbound and converted a layup to put Marist back on top 13-12, which served as the score after one quarter.
- The senior forward scored Marist's first bucket of the second quarter on a straightaway three-pointer to put the Red Foxes on top 16-14.
- However, the visitors would miss their next 13 shots, going scoreless for 5:58 as Quinnipiac staked itself to a 29-20 lead at halftime.
- With the score 32-23 Quinnipiac, Duffell cashed in on a layup and Weimar nailed a mid-range jumper to pull within two possessions.
- Rose Caverly responded with a Bobcat three at the halfway point, but a 7-0 Marist run pulled the Foxes within 35-34, capped off by a second-chance putback from Duffell.
- After Quinnipiac pushed the lead back to seven, Kennedy buried a three-pointer to make it 41-37 Bobcats after three quarters.
- Marist tied the game at 43 when Weimar intercepted an outlet pass and handed off to Best, who led Duffell to the low post for the bunny with 5:57 to play in the fourth quarter.
- Krick put the Red Foxes ahead for the first time in the second half at the 4:12 mark, escaping a logjam in the paint for right-block layup.
- Marist led by as much as 47-43 after a Weimar jumper in the final minutes of regulation, but DeWees scored five points to keep the game tight.
- As the visitors held a 50-48 lead with 5.3 seconds to go, Caverly snuck past two defenders and scooped a bucket off glass and in to send the game to overtime.
- With Quinnipiac ahead 53-51 and two minutes down in the extra stanza, Barcello lofted a pass from the arc to Duffell in the low post, converting a floater.
- Duffell answered a DeWees layup with two foul shots to knot the game at 55, but Amani Free's layup with 1:02 remaining put Quinnipiac ahead for good. Weimar could not connect on a baseline jumper, and Best was off on a three-pointer.
- Marist shot just 23 percent in the first half, including 2-of-18 in the second quarter. All told, the Red Foxes made 29 percent of their shots and 4-of-19 from three.
- On the opposite side, Quinnipiac shot just 33 percent, and 4-of-24 from distance.
- Best led the team with five assists.
- Both teams corralled 45 rebounds and accounted for 26 points in the paint.
- Though the Red Foxes had 17 turnovers, the team totaled 15 points off 16 Quinnipiac turnovers.
- Marist had 11 second-chance points, compared to just four for the Bobcats.
- Duffell was the first Red Fox to record more than 15 rebounds since Tori Jarosz on February 27th, 2016. Her previous career-highs were 15 points vs. Siena on February 1st, 2019 and 13 rebounds against Rider on January 16th, 2020.
- Weimar has scored 10 or more points in five of her first six games at Marist. Before the game, she collected MAAC Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season.
- Monday was only Marist's second overtime contest since February 18th, 2018.
- The loss snaps the Red Foxes' three-game win streak against Quinnipiac. The all-time series now favors the Bobcats 14-7.
