POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Behind a record-setting night from Jordan Newblatt, the Marist volleyball team defeated Canisius 3-1 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at McCann Arena on Saturday night.
 
The sophomore outside hitter tallied 31 kills, a new single-match program record. She added 21 digs and a .400 hitting percentage.
 

Summary

• Canisius led for much of the first set, and had a 15-12 advantage when Marist called for time. The Red Foxes ended the set by outscoring the Golden Griffins 13-6. Kills by Newblatt accounted for the Red Foxes' final three points of the set.
• Set two unfolded in a similar fashion to set one. Canisius built a 12-8 lead, which led to a Marist timeout. The Red Foxes proceeded to outscore the Golden Griffins 17-7 the remainder of the set. Marist closed the set on a 4-0 run, with three kills by Gabriella Heimbauer and an ace from Morgan Owens.
• After Marist scored four points in a row to take a 22-20 lead in set three, Canisius closed the set with a 5-1 spurt to keep the match going.
• After Canisius grabbed a 13-12 lead in set four, Marist closed out the set and the match on a 13-4 run. Newblatt registered 10 kills in the fourth set alone, and her final one closed out the match.

• In large part due to Newblatt's efforts, the Red Foxes hit .307 as a team.
• Heimbauer had 18 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
• McKinley Fox had a match-high 56 assists plus 14 digs and two blocks.
• Morgan Owens had a match-high 28 digs.
• Ella Loussia had 19 kills and a .372 hitting percentage for Canisius.

 

Notes

• Marist's previous single-match record for kills was 28, set by current Marist volunteer assistant Megan Fergus (in 2019), Sally Hanson (in 2006), and Jaime Kenworthy (in 2005). All of those matches were five sets. The highest total number of kills a Red Fox had recorded in a four-set match was 25 by Christina Brozek in 2003.
• Newblatt, the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, had 119 kills her in her last five matches.
• Fox's 56 assists were the second-highest total of her career.
• Owens' 28 digs were the second-highest total of her career.
• Marist has won five of its last six.
• Marist is 4-0 in MAAC matches at McCann Arena this season.
