Women’s Basketball Falls at No. 11 Arizona

Red Foxes Led After First Quarter, Wildcats Pulled Away in Second Half

TUCSON, Arizona – The Marist women's basketball team fell to 11th-ranked Arizona, which appeared in last season's national championship game, by a score of 78-36 on Friday night.
 
Summary
  • Kendall Krick's bucket at the 4:47 mark of the first quarter gave Marist its first lead at 9-8.
  • A three-pointer by Zaria Shazer and jumper by Emma Wax enabled the Red Foxes to close the first quarter on a 5-0 run, and Marist led 14-12 after 10 minutes.
  • After Arizona scored the first four points of the second quarter, two free throws by Shazer tied the score at 16 apiece at the 8:17 mark. However, the Wildcats seized control with an 8-0 run in the quarter, and took a 32-22 halftime lead.
  • Arizona outscored Marist 26-5 in the third quarter, and led by 31 after 30 minutes.
  • The final margin of 42 was the largest of the game.
 
Stats
  • Krick, who hails from Chandler, Arizona, led Marist with eight points. She shot 4-for-7 from the field and also had a team-high three steals.
  • Wax and Kiara Fisher led the Red Foxes with four rebounds apiece.
  • Arizona's Sam Thomas led all scorers with 14 points.
  • Arizona held a 53-27 rebounding advantage, and shot 11-for-24 (.458) from three while Marist shot 3-for-19 (.158).
 
Notes
  • This was Marist's first meeting with Arizona in program history.
  • The Red Foxes' last game in the state of Arizona was its first NCAA Tournament game in 2004, which occurred at Arizona State against Oklahoma.
  • Marist is now 1-2 all-time against the 12 schools that currently comprise the Pac-12.
