ALBANY, New York - The third-seeded Marist volleyball team fell in the quarterfinals against sixth-seeded Quinnipiac, 3-2, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Championship quarterfinal round Friday night. The Bobcats won by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-10.
Marist ends the season with an overall record of 17-13 .The Bobcats improve to 11-17 and move on to the MAAC semifinals, where they will play #2 Rider.
- Marist led 9-5 in the first set, due to five kills from Sasha van der Merwe. The Bobcats then responded, going on a 7-1 run to take a 12-10 lead in the first. Marist tied the set at 12-12, and battled with the Bobcats to then tie again at 20-20. Quinnipiac scored five straight points soon after to conclude the first set at 25-21.
- In a competitive second set, Marist re-claimed the lead at 14-12, as Jordan Newblatt shined in attacks that helped Marist win with a final score of 25-23.
- Leading into the third set, the Bobcats held a strict lead 19-16 and kept it for the rest of the set to finish with a final score of 25-21 and force set four.
- With neither team taking more than a three-point lead in the frame. Marist fought to secure a scrappy win of 25-23 and sent the match to a decisive fifth set.
- With the fifth set left to be the deciding factor, Quinnipiac went on an 8-2 run. Unfortunately, the Red Foxes could not respond and lost with a final score of 15-10.
The Bobcats won back the serve multiple times to maintain their slim late leads, owning a .283 side-out percentage to Marist's mark of .206 The Bobcats held the advantage in kills, digs and assists in the match.
- Newblatt led the Red Foxes with 24 kills and added 15 digs.
- van der Merwe had a match-high of 20 kills. Gabriella Heimbauer added 19 and hit .250.
- Morgan Owens had a match-high 23 digs, while senior setter McKinley Fox gave a match-high of 54 assists.
- Marist had five aces and five service errors; Quinnipiac had nine aces and nine service errors.
- Nicole Legg had 14 kills and hit .500 for the Bobcats.
