We are fully aware that a statement pales in comparison to actions that need to be taken on a daily basis. We are just as aware that you need to hear from us.
Dating violence in any way has no place in our department, no place on our campus, and no place in our society. Anyone found to commit such a heinous act will no longer be part of our department. There is no gray area here.
Student-athletes who are successful at Marist are those with good character. In addition to being able to compete athletically at our level, they will be able to succeed in the classroom, and to make the surrounding community a better place by their actions.
In previous years, the Marist football program has participated in activities that have affirmed its stance on violence against women. Student-athletes Dan Smith and Adalberto Ruiz brought the White Ribbon Campaign to our campus in 2008, which has become an annual event. Director of Student-Athlete Enhancement
Alyssa Gates has worked tirelessly on this event and with Brenda Tracy on the Set The Expectation Game we have hosted the prior two seasons. The messages are profound, and ones we wholeheartedly believe in. They need to be backed by actions – not just on the days of these events. Every single day, by everyone.
We are fully aware that some will read this and be critical of the timing and messaging. We appreciate your passion for wanting Marist to be a better community. Let's come together and get there.
