POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist baseball team split a doubleheader with the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes came alive in the seventh inning of game one, scoring six runs in the final frame to snag a 7-2 victory, and then lost in the second game of the day 3-0.
With the split, Marist's record goes to 1-1 on the season (1-1 MAAC), while Saint Peter's record improves to 2-4 (2-4 MAAC).
GAME 1 SUMMARY
Marist 7, Saint Peter's 1 (7 innings)
WP: Cantone (1-0) ; LP: Christian Coombes (0-1)
- Cardona struck five in his first turn through the batting order, all within the first two innings.
- After first baseman Brian Picone led off the third with a single and advanced to second, designated hitter Tyler Kapuscinski laced a double to center field to put Marist ahead 1-0.
- In the bottom half of the frame, the Peacocks' Andrew Connor homered to even the score at one.
- Marist threatened for more with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, but came away empty.
- Saint Peter's also put multiple runners on in the fifth, but Cardona struck out Sam Delcollo to escape the jam.
- Picone laced another leadoff hit in the seventh, this time a double to center. Outfielder Colin Mackle pinch ran, and made it home on an RBI single from Robbie Armitage for a 2-1 Red Fox lead.
- Two batters later, left fielder Brian Hart notched a single, and Armitage crossed the plate with help from a Peacocks error to make it 3-1 Marist.
- Consecutive bases loaded walks from second baseman Ben McNeill and shortstop Dylan Hoy extended the lead to 5-1, then Mackle singled to bring home two runs to cap a six-run seventh inning.
- The Peacocks scratched a run across in the bottom half, but pitcher Nick Cantone, who relieved Cardona in the sixth, struck out three batters to seal the victory.
GAME 2 SUMMARY

- Pansini navigated around trouble in the first three innings, with help from the Red Fox defense starting two double plays in the first and third innings.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Peacocks' Matthew Dubois reached on an error, later scoring on Nick Font's RBI single to put the home team up 1-0.
- Catcher Niko Amory and Hoy collected Marist's first two hits in the top of the fifth, but were stranded at third and second base, respectively.
- The Peacocks countered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth on an Delcollo's RBI double and Dubois' sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
- That score held till the end of the game, with the Peacocks' Wappaus coming in to earn the save.
STATS
- Cardona held the Peacocks to just one earned run in five innings in his first start of the season in game one. He allowed just four hits and struck out eight.
- Pansini finished game two having thrown five innings and allowing just two earned runs with three strikeouts.
- Jordan Woracke threw eight shutout innings for the Peacocks in the second game.
- Mackle's two RBIs on the day led Marist. McNeill and Picone each had two hits on the day.
- Hoy had hits in both games for the Red Foxes.
NOTES
- In his first career game with the Red Foxes, McNeill reached base three times and drove in his first run.
- Cantone earned his fourth career victory in game one, and his five strikeouts were a career-high.
- Cardona has now struck out at least eight batters in three of his last five outings.
- Pichardo collected five strikeouts in game two, which is the eight time in his career he has done so.

The Red Foxes have two more games against Saint Peter's tomorrow afternoon. The first game of the double-header is scheduled for noon. Following the conclusion of this weekend's series, Marist will return to Poughkeepsie for its 2021 home opener on Wednesday, April 21 against the Siena Saints. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at Noon at McCann Field.
