Marist Softball Takes Game Two at Fairfield

McDonald Belts First Collegiate Homer, Haff Tosses Two-Hitter

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Fairfield. The Red Foxes dropped game one, 4-3 in eight innings, but rebounded for a 9-3 triumph in the nightcap.
 
Game One Summary
Fairfield 4, Marist 3 (8 inn.) – W: Lauryn Rhinehart (4-4), L: Calista Phippen (1-2)
  • A two-out rally led a three-run third inning for Marist. Sam Freeland and Miah McDonald had back-to-back singles. Kaley Coltrain's single brought home Freeland, and Ali Milam's ensuing double brought home McDonald and pinch-runner Hannah Brock.
  • Phippen retired the first eight Fairfield hitters.
  • Sam Merino's two-run single in the sixth inning brought Fairfield to within one at 3-2.
  • Kasey Sekula's two-out double in the seventh scored Kaitlin Hoffman, and tied the game.
  • Mikayla Rubin won the game for Fairfield with a two-out homer in the eighth.
  • Phippen pitched a game complete with eight strikeouts and no walks.
  • Freeland went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Milam and Coltrain had two hits apiece.
  • Lauryn Rhinehart pitched five scoreless innings of relief for Fairfield, with five strikeouts and no walks.
 
Game Two Summary
Marist 9, Fairfield 3 – W: Meghan Haff (1-0), L: Allie Bridgman (3-1)
  • Caroline Baratta hit a triple on the first pitch of the game, scored on an RBI off the bat of McDonald.
  • Shea Walsh led off the second inning with a walk. She later stole third, and came home on a throwing error.
  • Hoffman homered to lead off the bottom of the second, which cut Marist's lead to 2-1.
  • McDonald's two-run triple in the third extended the Red Foxes' lead to 4-1.
  • Fairfield made it a one-run game in the bottom half of the inning with two runs scored on wild pitches.
  • McDonald led off the fifth with an opposite-field homer. The Red Foxes went on to score three times in the inning.
  • RBI singles by Walsh and Hailee Jantorno in the seventh gave Marist two more insurance runs.
  • McDonald finished with four RBIs, and Walsh scored three runs.
  • Baratta reached safely in all four plate appearances. She went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base.
  • Haff went the distance, allowed just two hits, and struck out eight.
 
Up Next
  • Marist will return to Fairfield for a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
  • Following Thursday's doubleheader, Marist will return home to host Rider for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for Sunday, but was moved due to inclement weather in the forecast.
