Softball Roars Back For Doubleheader Split

Red Foxes Scored 12 Unanswered Runs In Game Two

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Rider on Friday at Gartland Field.
 
The Broncs prevailed in game one, 5-2. In game two, Marist scored 12 unanswered runs for a 12-2 triumph in six innings via the mercy rule.
 
Game One Summary
Rider 5, Marist 2 – W: Debra Jones (6-6), L: Calista Phippen (1-4)
 
  • Caroline Baratta homered to lead off the bottom of the first for the Red Foxes.
  • Rider countered with three runs in the top of the second.
  • Baratta's two-out single in the bottom of the second brought home Alyssa Grupp, and cut Marist's deficit to one.
  • The score remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh, when Elena Gonzalez's two-run homer gave Rider a three-run lead and closed out the scoring.
  • Debra Jones went the distance for Rider and allowed four hits – two by Baratta, and two by Shea Walsh.
  • Calista Phippen struck out six in 6.1 innings for the Red Foxes. Three of the five runs she allowed were unearned.
  • Kelsey Marigliano went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk for Rider. Gonzalez drove in three runs.
 
Game Two Summary
Marist 12, Rider 2 (6 innings) – W: Meghan Haff (3-0), L: Anna-Marie Groskritz (4-3)
 
  • Rider scored twice in the top of the first. Grace Stansfield's RBI single brought home Marigliano, and Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch.
  • Miah McDonald's two-run homer tied the game in the bottom of the first.
  • The Red Foxes took the lead in the second when Baratta's double scored Hunter Hand.
  • The score stayed at 3-2 until Marist ended the game with a nine-run sixth. The first run came when Shea Walsh came home on the front end of a double steal with Hailee Jantorno. Six of the runs came with two outs, capped by a three-run walk-off homer by Julia Blarr.
  • Meghan Haff pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts for the Red Foxes.
  • Hand and Ali Milam had three hits apiece for the Red Foxes.
  • Marigliano had three walks and a run scored for Rider.
 
Notes
  • Baratta led Marist on the day in both hits (four) and RBIs (four).
  • McDonald's homer was her second in five games. Baratta's was her first of the season, and Blarr's was her first as a Red Fox.
  • Walsh has now hit safely in eight straight games, and nine out of 10 this season.

  • Marist and Rider will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Gartland Field.
