Softball’s Season Ends at MAAC Championships

Red Foxes Drop Two One-Run Games

BUFFALO, New York – The eighth-seeded Marist softball team had its season come to an end on Friday at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. The Red Foxes were defeated by sixth-seeded Manhattan, 2-1 in nine innings, and second-seeded Canisius, 1-0.
 
Summary
Manhattan 2, Marist 1 – W: Nicole Williams (12-2), L: Calista Phippen (9-6)
  • Caroline Baratta led off the game with a double for the Red Foxes, and advanced to third on a Sam Freeland sacrifice, but was left at third.
  • Calista Phippen did not allow a Manhattan hit through the first three innings.
  • In the top of the fourth, a two-out bunt single by Miah McDonald brought home Sam Freeland with the game's first run.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Manhattan tied the game when Christine Gebhardt's RBI single up the middle brought home Lily Fish.
  • Manhattan loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but a lineout to McDonald at third ended the inning.
  • Marist did not score the rest of the way despite having getting runners in scoring position in the fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth.
  • An unassisted double play by Ali Milam at first base ended a Manhattan rally in the eighth.
  • Manhattan won in the bottom of the ninth. Annie Moore's infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth brought home Gabriella Mazzotta.
  • Phippen pitched a complete game and struck out seven.
  • Nicole Williams went the distance for Manhattan and struck out 12.
  • Kaley Coltrain and Hailee Jantorno each had two hits for the Red Foxes.
 
Canisius 1, Marist 0 – W: Emily Nicosia (8-5), L: Meghan Haff (5-2)
  • Canisius scored the game's lone run on Hannah Catallo-Stooks' solo home run in the bottom of the second.
  • The Red Foxes had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but could not score.
  • Canisius starter Emily Nicosia pitched a two-hitter. She struck out seven and walked two.
  • Caroline Baratta had both of Marist's hits.
  • Meghan Haff pitched a five-hitter for Marist. She struck out seven.
