coach's comments

"The Men's Crew is excited to be heading to the IRA this weekend to complete what has been an immensely challenging season. Owing to COVID 19 case numbers and restrictions, the rowing team was unable to practice together on the water from March 15th, 2020 until April 23rd, 2021, a loss of over a year of formal training. The team did a magnificent job during the pandemic challenging one another virtually with nearly all training taking place alone on rowing machines in the athlete's basements, garages, and living rooms. With minimal time to prepare on the water, the oarsmen and coxswains have worked hard to place us in a position to be competitive this weekend. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and we can't wait to see what they can do!

This year's regatta represents a departure from the norm, with the IRA switching to an invitational-style event owing to the inability to accurately select from annual qualifier races. The result has been an abnormally large field in the V8 and 2V8 events, with 31 and 27 crews competing in each race, respectively. Because of the number of crews, and a desire to keep the racing schedule down to only two days (to reduce exposure of our athletes), the regatta will begin this year with a time trial, with each crew completing the 2000-meter course as fast as possible on their own. The top 18 crews will progress to the A/B/C semifinals, and the top three finals with the lower crews competing for the D and E finals. With so much riding on this time trial, the focus for our crews has been to produce a maximal best result in this early race in order to set up the rest of the weekend.

While the team remains focused on our best possible performance at the IRA, we are also aware that this has been an extraordinary year. The seeds and rankings that come with a standard season have meant very little in 2021. We are loving being back on the water and sharing the joy of training hard and competing with one another. At this year's IRA, I can definitely say that, first and foremost, we will simply be happy to be there. We want to thank all of the people who have worked hard to make this spring season possible including the Marist Athletics department administrators, our fantastic athletic training staff who have gone above and beyond this term, and our parents and alumni who have been exceedingly supportive in a difficult time. Go Red Foxes!!!" – Campbell Woods, Men's Rowing Head Coach
