Women’s Soccer Drops Match At Army

Colatosti Records Four Shots, Kelchner Makes Five Saves

WEST POINT, New York – For the second consecutive game, the Marist women's soccer program outshot their opponent, but a second-half score gave Army the 1-0 win on Thursday evening at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.

The result drops the Red Foxes to 0-2 on the young season, while the Black Knights gather their first win of the year to improve to 1-2.

Both sides played an even first half, as Marist and Army each had three shots on goal and three saves in a scoreless frame. However, Lindsey Smith found Trinity Garay just after halftime for the game's only goal.

Senior forward Victoria Colatosti paced the Red Foxes with four shots, two of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner posted five saves.

Garay and Lauren Drysdale each had three shots to lead the Black Knights. Netminder Sage Strohman posted a six-save shutout.

first half
  • Just 2:30 into the game, Marist dispossessed Army in the home team's defensive end, and sophomore midfielder Amanda Caldarelli ripped a 20-yard shot from the middle that Strohman had to leap to bat away from the upper-right corner.
  • In the 14th minute, a Black Knight shot pinballed and bounced behind Kelchner, who had to dive just before the end line to keep it out the cage.
  • Following a hydration break in the 27th minute, Army earned a corner kick that led to an Emma Richey header, but Kelchner was on top of it for the save. In transition, sophomore forward Bridget Dudziec got open inside the box for a shot that went right to Stroman.
  • On Army's ensuing possession, Smith got open on the right wing, but Kelchner deflected her close-range shot away, then denied Drysdale from the left side moments later.
  • With three and a half minutes until halftime, Dudziec sent a cross to junior forward Brooke Cergol, who circled towards the left post and flicked a shot that was wide left.

second half
  • Almost four minutes after the break, Colatosti fended off multiple defenders to put a left foot on the ball from seven yards away, but the Army defense redirected it before it got closer.
  • In the 52nd minute, Smith raced down the right wing and crossed to Garay, whose one-timer found the netting to break the scoreless tie.
  • Six minutes later, Drysdale challenged Kelchner from just inside the box, but the netminder slid to her right keep the deficit at one.
  • In the 64th minute, Marist earned a corner that Colatosti settled herself and shot, but an Army defender kept the shot out of the net right on the goal line to preserve the Black Knight lead.
  • Junior forward Leah Barbieri secured a Black Knights in the offensive zone towards the left wing in the 80th minute, but her opportunity was sent wide left.
  • Marist had one last attempt with 35 seconds to play, but Dudziec couldn't find twine from the left side.
