BRONXVILLE, New York - The Marist volleyball team fell to Iona in five sets on Saturday afternoon on the Gaels home court.Â
Marist won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-16, before Iona prevailed 25-22, 25-19, 15-12 in sets three, four, and five.
- In set one Iona jumped out to 5-0 lead, but Gabrielle Heller led the come back with five kills as the Red Foxes went on to win 25-19.
- A 6-1 run to start the second set propelled Marist to a 25-16 win as Sasha van der Merwe had six kills and Heller added five more kills to her tally.
- In the third set Iona rattled off three straight points and never trailed the rest of the set as they went on to win it 25-22.
- Neither team could find separation early in the fourth set as it was tied 11-11 before a huge Iona run gave them a 22-12 lead. The Gaels hung on to win 25-19.
- The Red Foxes fell short in set five by a score of 15-12, as Iona came away with the 3-2 victory.
- Sasha van der Merwe and Gabrielle Heller each had a match-high 18 kills.
- Four Red Foxes notched at least 10 digs: Morgan Owens (17), van der Merwe (16), McKinley Fox (14), and Jordan Newblatt (12).
- Fox had a match-high 38 assists.
- The Red Foxes are right back on the road as they travel to Riverdale, New York to take on conference opponent Manhattan on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.
