Marist Falls on Senior Day to Valparaiso

Bagozzi-Downes Passing Tandem Shines in Loss

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Marist football fell on Senior Day in its home finale to Valparaiso, 45-24, on Saturday at Tenney Stadium. Marist moves to 4-6 on the season, 4-4 in Pioneer Football League play.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Valparaiso's Aaron Dawson had the game's first score on a one-yard touchdown with 52 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Luke Paladino started the scoring for the Red Foxes with a field goal, trimming the Beacons lead to 7-3 in the second quarter.
  • With two touchdowns in the last five minutes of the first half, Valparaiso extended its lead to 24-3 going into halftime.
  • The Marist defense came out of the half tough. The defense stopped Valparaiso on a fourth-and-two run at the 12-minute mark in the third.
  • Quarterback Brock Bagozzi cut the Valpo lead to 24-10 with a 13-yard touchdown run.
  • The Beacons scored two unanswered touchdowns, which increased the lead to 38-10. Dawson caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Mikey Appel, and Kholton Sherman had a 95-yard interception return.
  • Wide receiver Will Downes made an incredible catch that led a 64-yard touchdown. The score cut the deficit for Marist, which trailed 38-17 in the fourth quarter.
  • At the 5:17 mark in the fourth quarter, tight end Brandon Lysick found the end zone. The pass thrown by Bagozzi trimmed the lead to 45-24 in favor of Valparaiso.  
STATS
  • Will Downes had seven catches for 159 yards and a touchdown.
  • Brock Bagozzi threw for 31 completions on 397 yards. Bagozzi also added three touchdowns, two through the air and one rushing.
  • Mike Arrington led the defense with 12 total tackles in the game. Arrington had seven solo tackles and assisted on five.
  • Aaron Acosta accounted for eight total tackles, including a tackle for a three-yard loss.
  • Clayborne Fields III had four kickoff returns for 78 yards. Fields also contributed eight total tackles on defense.

  • The Red Foxes fall to 4-6 on the season. Marist drops to 4-4 in Pioneer Football League play.
  • The Beacons improve to 5-5 on the season. Valparaiso moves to 4-3 in league play with the win.
