Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener Against American

Farris Scores 20 On Perfect Three-Point Shooting Percentage

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's basketball team won its season opener against American on Wednesday at McCann Arena, 73-69.  
 
Summary
  • At the first media timeout, American led Marist 16-13. 
  • The Red Foxes took a 24-23 lead on the strength of back-to-back three-pointers by Kam Farris.
  • American took a 39-38 halftime lead.
  • Marist outscored American 17-10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
  • Marist forced six turnovers in a four-minute span in the middle of the second half.
  • A three-pointer by Geoff Sprouse gave American a 66-65 lead with five minutes to play. However, Javon Cooley's three at the 4:08 mark put Marist up 68-65, and the Red Foxes never surrendered the lead the rest of the way.
  • After Sprouse's three, Marist held American scoreless for 4:15. The Eagles had just one field goal the rest of the game, which came with one second left.

  • Farris scored 20 points in his Red Foxes' debut. Farris shot 70 percent from the field (7-for-10) and a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc.  
  • Patrick Gardner scored 19 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field
  • Cooley led the team in rebounds with 10 and assists with four. He scored eight points.
  • The Red Foxes shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from three-point range. The Red Foxes outshot the Eagles 52.4-44.4 (12-for-27) from behind the arc.

  • Marist is now 3-2 under head coach John Dunne in season openers. Marist had lost 10 straight season openers from 2009-18, and has gone 3-1 since.
  • Marist is now 3-2 against American all-time. This was the Eagles' first trip to Poughkeepsie since 1999.
