Bats Explode as Red Foxes Win Season Opener

Marist Downs Norfolk State in Game 1

NORFOLK, Virginia - The Marist Red Foxes opened up their 2022 season on Friday afternoon with a win against Norfolk State by a final score of 12-3.

  • Marist wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning with a Brian Hart single, followed by a Robbie Armitage RBI-double to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Nick Cantone recorded 4 strikeouts through the first two innings.
  • In the top of the third, Marist loaded the bases on an error, Niko Amory single, and walk. With two outs and Robbie Armitage up to bat, the graduate student drew another walk to give Marist a 2-0 lead. Norfolk State answered back in the bottom half of the inning with three singles to tie the game at two. 
  • Dylan Hoy took advantage of a runner in scoring position with an RBI-single in the top of the fourth, scoring Gene Napolitano and giving Marist a 3-2 lead. Marist maintained that lead until the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Cleveland hit a solo shot to tie the game again. After 4.1 innings, Cantone's day was done and Drake Quinn came on in relief. 
  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Niko Amory got busy again with a bases-clearing double to score three runs for Marist and give them a 6-3. Marist stayed on top of things in the seventh when both Robbie and Reece Armitage scored on a Gavin Noriega double, giving Marist an 8-3 lead. Noriega later came in to score on a wild pitch, putting them ahead 10-3 after seven.
  • Following a Reece Armitage walk, and Donnie Stone reaching on an error, Napolitano singled to extend the Red Foxes lead. Stone scored on a wild pitch, and Hoy singled in Napolitano to give Marist a 12-3 lead.
  • The Spartans threatened with base runners in the bottom half of the ninth, but Drake Quinn shut it down to secure the 12-3 win for the Red Foxes.
