WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Marist softball team opened its 2022 season in tournament play at UNC Wilmington on Friday. The Red Foxes fell twice to the host Seahawks by scores of 6-1 in game one and 7-2 in game two.
 

Game One

• Neither team scored in the first three innings. Marist left four runners on base in this time, while UNCW stranded two.
• The Seahawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, when Lauryn Richardson's RBI single brought home Elizabeth Winsted.
• Marist answered back in the top of the fifth. Morgan Gianelle led off the inning with a double and scored on Sam Freeland's two-out single.
• UNCW broke the game open with a five-run sixth. Anna Knox's two-run homer gave her team the lead for good, and Morgan Britt added a two-run double later in the inning.
• Kara Hammock (3-0) pitched a complete game. She scattered seven hits and struck out five for UNCW.
• Maddie Pleasants (0-1) started and went 4.2 in her collegiate debut. Kiley Myers pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
• Shea Walsh went 2-for-4 for the Red Foxes.

 

Game Two

• The Red Foxes started hot in game two, wasting no time in building a 2-0 lead. Walsh led off the game with a single, and scored on a double by Maddie Gore in her first collegiate at bat. Gore then came home on an RBI single by Caroline Baratta.
• Janel Gamache's two-run double tied the game in the third.
• UNCW broke it open with a four-run fifth. Richardson and Britt both had two-run singles in the inning.
• The Seahawks added an insurance run in the sixth.
• Meghan Haff (0-1) struck out five in five innings. Myers struck out two in relief in the sixth.
• Emily Winstead struck out five in three perfect innings of relief for UNCW.
