Softball Wins Twice, Extends Winning Streak to Three

Red Foxes Defeat URI & Stetson at Hatter Classic

DeLAND, Florida – The Marist softball team won twice on Friday in its first day of competition at the Hatter Classic. The Red Foxes earned an 11-5 win over Rhode Island in their first game of the day, and then prevailed 3-2 over Stetson in game two.
 
Marist is now 3-4 on the season with three straight wins.
 
Game One
  • Meghan Davis' grand slam, the second of her career, staked the Red Foxes to an early 4-0 lead.
  • Kaitlyn Husic's first career home gave Marist a 5-0 advantage.
  • Marist expanded its lead to 8-1 thanks to an RBI single by Caroline Baratta, scoring Shea Walsh, and a two-run double by Miah McDonald.
  • URI cut its deficit to 8-5 in the top of the sixth, but the Red Foxes countered in the bottom half with a bases-clearing double by Baratta, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
  • Maddie Pleasants earned her first collegiate win as she went 5.1 innings. Kiley Myers got the final five outs for the save.
 
Game Two
  • Neither team had a hit in the first three innings.
  • In the top of the fourth, Kaley Coltrain led off with a walk and was pinch-run for by Alyssa Yarem, who advanced to third on Baratta's single and scored on a single by Maddie Gore.
  • Stetson tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but McDonald came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh to provide the game's decisive runs.
  • Stetson cut its deficit to one in the seventh and had the tying run on second with one out, but Meghan Haff ended the game with a flyout and strikeout.
  • Haff struck out eight and tossed a six-hitter.
 
Up Next
  • Marist will play twice in the Hatter Classic on Saturday.
  • The Red Foxes will have back-to-back contests against Harvard (10:30 a.m.) and URI (scheduled for 12:30 p.m.).
