TUCSON, Arizona – The Marist softball team split its two games on Saturday at the Bear Down Fiesta tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona.
The Red Foxes earned an 8-6 victory over Yale in the first game of the day, but then fell to the #8/#16/#20 host Wildcats 11-0 in five innings in their second game.
Marist is now 9-10 on the season.
- Carmen Muscolina's three-run homer gave Yale a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Marist answered with six runs in its half of the first. The first seven Red Foxes reached safely in the inning.
- Yale cut its deficit to 6-4 in the second. Maddie Latta led off with a triple, and scored on a bunt by Willa Ferrer.
- McDonald's solo homer in the fourth gave Marist a three-run lead again at 7-4.
- Yale made the score 7-6 in the fifth with runs coming home on a wild pitch and an error.
- Davis' sixth-inning single brought home Baratta with an insurance run.
- Yale loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Kiley Myers got a groundout to end the game.
- Marist had 11 hits. Walsh had three, while Baratta and McDonald had two.
- McDonald and Gianelle had three RBIs. McDonald and Baratta each scored two runs.
- Maddie Pleasants went the first 4.2 for the win, and Myers finished with 2.1 scoreless for the save.
- Muscolina finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Yale.
- Walsh led off with a single, and the Red Foxes had runners on first and second with one out in the first, but were unable to score.
- Arizona scored single runs in the first and second.
- The Red Foxes again had runners on first and second with one out in the third, but were unable to score.
- The Wildcats then scored five in the third, with back-to-back home runs from Allie Skaggs and Carlie Scupin, and a three-run homer from Amber Toven.
- Arizona then tacked on four more runs in the fourth.
- Walsh got on base safely in all three of her plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch. On the day, she had five hits and reached safely six times in seven plate appearances.
- Toven went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two home runs.
- Marist closes out play in Bear Down Fiesta against Arizona on Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern.
