STOCKTON, California – The Marist softball team split its two games on Friday at the Mizuno Classic. The Red Foxes came back from a five-run deficit for a 6-5 triumph in nine innings over host Pacific in their first game. In their second contest, Sacramento State defeated the Red Foxes, 9-0 in six innings.
Marist is now 10-14 on the season.
- Pacific got on the board first with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first.
- Rian Dirmeyer tripled and scored on a groundout by Carly Lucchetti, which gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead in the second.
- Nina Davis' third-inning homer extended Pacific's lead to 5-0.
- Marist got two runs back in the fourth. Miah McDonald singled to start the inning, and Meghan Davis followed with a walk. McDonald and pinch-runner Lauren Morrell scored on a fielder's choice and subsequent error off the bat of Maddie Gore.
- The Red Foxes added two more runs in the fifth. Shea Walsh started the rally with a single, and scored on McDonald's sacrifice fly. Caroline Baratta then came home from second on Davis' single.
- Kaitlyn Husic's two-out homer tied the game in the sixth.
- In the top of the ninth, Baratta's two-out double brought home Gore with what proved to be the game-winning run. It held up when Baratta threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the second out in the bottom of the ninth.
- Sam Freeland led the Red Foxes with two hits.
- Maddie Pleasants earned the win with seven innings of relief. She allowed just one hit, and did not permit any in her final 6.2 innings of work. She added four strikeouts.
- Marist is now 3-1 in extra-inning games this season, with three straight wins.
- Lewa Day homered to lead off the game for Sacramento State.
- Carley Morfey's single drove home Day in the third, which gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
- Sacramento State broke the game open with a seven-run sixth, which was capped by a three-run homer from Morfey.
- The Red Foxes received singles from Walsh and Hailee Jantorno.
- Marist closes out play in the Mizuno Classic, and its Spring Break trip, with two games on Saturday.
- The Red Foxes will face Santa Clara at 1 p.m. Eastern, and Pacific at 5:30.
