Softball Splits on Day Two of Tournament Play in Louisiana

Red Foxes Earn Nine-Inning Win Over Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The Marist softball team went 1-1 on Saturday in its second day of the Lion Classic II Tournament. After being defeated by Buffalo, 9-1 in five innings, in their first game of the day, the Red Foxes bounced back for a 3-2 win in nine innings against Southeastern Louisiana.
 
Marist is now 7-7 on the season, and 2-2 in the Lion Classic II Tournament.
 
Game One
  • After a scoreless first two innings, Marist struck first in the top of the third. Morgan Gianelle drew a one-out walk, went to third on a Shea Walsh double, and scored on a bunt single by Sam Freeland.
  • However, Buffalo answered with two runs in third and four in the fourth. The Bulls then closed out the Red Foxes with a three-run fifth.
  • Alexis Lucyshyn drove in four runs, including the game-ending two-run single. She also pitched and allowed just two hits in four innings.
  • Maddie Pleasants struck out seven for the Red Foxes.
 
Game Two
  • Once again, Marist scored first, this time with two runs in the first. Miah McDonald's single brought home Caroline Baratta. McDonald later stole third, and scored on a wild pitch.
  • However, Southeastern Louisiana tied the game in its half of the first on a two-run double by Madison Rayner.
  • After allowing the first three Lions' hitters to reach, Kiley Myers then retired six straight and kept Southeastern Louisiana off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Myers stranded runners at third in the eighth and ninth as she improved to 3-0 on the season. She struck out six and walked just one.
  • Marist broke the tie in the top of the ninth on Kaitlyn Husic's two-out single, which brought home Alyssa Grupp.
  • McDonald and Grupp both finished with two hits apiece.

  • Marist closes out play in the Lion Classic II against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern.
