Women’s Basketball Prepares for MAAC Championship

The Red Foxes Begin MAAC Championship Play Tuesday Morning

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team wrapped up their season on Saturday, in their final game of the year against Manhattan. The Red Foxes finished the regular season 8-20 and 6-14 in-conference. Marist finished in 10th place in the MAAC this season.
 
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
  • Big wins for the Red Foxes came against Drexel University, 52-50, and the University of Vermont, 67-50. Kiara Fisher led the team with 17 points and Zaria Shazer 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win against UVM.
  • Shazer recorded her career-high in points this season with 23 in a win against Niagara University.
  • Head Coach Brian Giorgis collected his 450th career win this season at home against St. Peters. Giorgis is in his 20th season as the Marist women's basketball coach. His career record as a head coach sits at 451-180 and is the first coach in Marist basketball history (men's and women's) to hit the 450-win mark.

  • Marist held the Play4Kay night as they hosted Rider on February 5th, spreading awareness for breast cancer with special pink jerseys.
  • The Red Foxes played their best at home, with six of their eight wins coming in McCann Arena.

MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP
  • The Red Foxes earned the tenth seed in the MAAC Championship. Their first-round opponent will be #7 Saint Peter's.
  • Fairfield, Manhattan, Quinnipiac, Niagara, and Siena all earned a first-round bye.
  • All games will be available to stream on ESPN+.
  • The Red Foxes were champions of the MAAC last season, besting Saint Peter's in the championship game. That win earned Coach Giorgis his 11th career MAAC Championship.
  • The Red Foxes won the MAAC Championship every year from 2006-2014. They lead the conference with 11 all-time MAAC Championships.
     
FIRST ROUND OPPONENT
  • Marist leads the all-time series against Saint Peter's, 39-19.
  • Marist is 5-0 against Saint Peter's all-time in MAAC championship play. As the #1 seed, the Red Foxes defeated #3 Saint Peter's in the championship game in 2021 by a score of 69-30.
    • Willow Duffell had game highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds. She added four assists and two steals, and shot 9-for-14 from the field.
    • Caitlin Weimar finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, and six blocked shots.
    • Allie Best had a game-high eight assists.
    • Marist shot .491 (28-for-57) from the field, while holding Saint Peter's to .208 (11-for-53).
    • Ajia James and Binta Salawu led Saint Peter's with six points apiece. Sky Castro led the Peacocks with seven rebounds.
  • The teams split the season series this year, each side winning at home.

  • Marist shot 28-of-109 (.257 percent) from the field and 8-of-42 (.190 percent) from behind the arc.
  • Saint Peters shot 35-of-104 (.337 percent) from the field and 11-of-37 (.297 percent) from three.
  • Trinasia Kennedy is averaging 10.5 points against the Peacocks. Kendall Krick averaged 10.5 points per game and averaged 4.5 rebounds against Saint Peter's.
