ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – The 10
th-seeded Marist women's basketball team had its season come to an end on Tuesday with a 49-29 loss to seventh-seeded Saint Peter's in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
- The Red Foxes hit their first three shots from the field, and jumped out to a 6-2 lead.
- Saint Peter's countered with a 10-0 run, as the Red Foxes were held scoreless for 5:16. Kendrea Williams had eight points for the Peacocks in this run.
- Saint Peter's led 14-9 after the first quarter.
- Neither team had a field goal in the first 4:12 of the second quarter.
- Saint Peter's outscored Marist 7-4 in the second quarter, and took a 21-13 halftime lead.
- A three-point play by Samantha Bailey brought Marist to within nine at the 5:43 mark of the third quarter, but Saint Peter's countered with an 11-4 run.
- Marist scored the final five points of the third quarter on a three-pointer by Erin Fox and two free throws by Annabel Ellison. Saint Peter's led 36-25 after 30 minutes.
- Kendall Krick's jumper brought Marist to within 10 with 5:57 remaining, but Saint Peter's closed the game by scoring the final 10 points. The final margin of 20 was the largest of the game.
- Krick led the Red Foxes with 10 points.
- Zaria Shazer had a team-best seven rebounds.
- Kaila Dawkins and Kendrea Williams led Saint Peter's with 10 points apiece, and Sky Castro had a game-high 19 rebounds.
- Marist shot 10-for-52 from the field and 1-for-22 from three-point range.
"We didn't shoot the ball well but that has been a bugaboo all year," Marist head coach
Brian Giorgis said. "There was way too much one-on-one and poor passing. … "I feel bad because I thought our defense played pretty well for the most part."
- Marist closed the season at 8-21.
- Saint Peter's is now 13-17.
Tuesday's game was the last for senior
Kendall Krick, a four-year member of the program. Krick played a key role for the Red Foxes throughout her career, and was part of the Red Foxes' 2021 championship team. In the postgame press conference, Giorgis lauded Krick for her work ethic, and referred to her as one of his 10 favorite players he has ever coached throughout his 40-year coaching career.
