Marist Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Quinnipiac

Red Foxes Take Both Ends of Sunday Doubleheader

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Quinnipiac by winning both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday at McCann Field. The Red Foxes earned a 7-3 victory in game one, and prevailed 17-5 in a game shortened to seven innings due to the mercy rule in game two.
 
Marist now stands at 16-10 overall and 6-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
 
Game One
W: Erubiel Candelario (4-2), L: Kevin Seitter (0-6)
  • Marist got on the board in the bottom of the first. Gene Napolitano led off with a double, which was followed by a Reece Armitage RBI double.
  • Quinnipiac tied the game in the top of the second. Anthony Donofrio singled, stole second, and scored on Danny Melnick's one-out single.
  • The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Ian Ostberg singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on the front end of an attempted double steal.
  • The Red Foxes then grabbed the lead for a good with three in their half of the third. Napolitano homered, Reece Armitage singled and then scored on a Robbie Armitage double, and Brian Hart's double plated Robbie Armitage.
  • Ostberg's two-out RBI single drove McGwire Tuffy in the fifth, and cut Marist's lead to 4-3.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Robbie Armitage singled and scored on Brian Hart's triple.
  • Marist added two more runs in the sixth. Dylan Hoy drew a leadoff walk and scored on Nathan Lincoln's one-out double. Napolitano's single then brought home Lincoln.
  • Quinnipiac had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Hoy, Lincoln, and Gavin Noriega turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
  • The top four hitters in the Marist order (Napolitano, Reece Armitage, Robbie Armitage, Hart) went 9-for-17 with six RBIs and six runs scored. Napolitano went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Marist outhit Quinnipiac, 12-5.
  • Erubiel Candelario recorded the win, with 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He struck out 10 for his second straight start and third time in his career, which tied a career high. Nick Cantone struck out two over the final 2.1 scoreless innings.
 
Game Two
W: Alex Pansini (4-2), L: Matt DeLuca (0-3)
 
  • Robbie Armitage started the scoring with a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the first. Hart then singled, went to third on a Noriega double, and scored on a wild pitch. Noriega scored the Red Foxes' third run of the frame when he came home on a Hoy single.
  • Marist extended its lead to 4-0 in the second. Lincoln led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a two-out double by Robbie Armitage.
  • Andrew McDermott's two-run homer cut Marist's lead to 4-2 in the third.
  • Marist then erupted for an 11-run fourth inning, which included seven hits and four Quinnipiac errors as the Red Foxes sent 15 batters to the plate. Robbie Armitage drove in three runs in the inning, and scored two. He and Lincoln both had two-run singles in the inning, and Colin Mackle had a two-run double. Reece Armitage stole home in the frame as well.
  • Marist scored its final two runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Hart and an RBI fielder's choice by Noriega, which brought home Reece Armitage and Robbie Armitage, respectively.
  • Alex Pansini went the first six innings to record the victory. Pansini struck out seven and did not walk anyone.
  • Marist outhit Quinnipiac, 17-10.
  • Robbie Armitage went 5-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Lincoln went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. He finished the day 7-for-9 with six runs scored and six RBIs.
  • Marist's 17 runs tied a season high, previously set on Friday against Quinnipiac and on March 19 at Fordham.
