Red Foxes Generate Six Turnovers, Defeat Toreros for First Time in Program History

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team earned a 30-16 victory over San Diego in a Pioneer Football League game at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.
 
Scoring
  • Re-al Mitchell's 49-yard touchdown run on a third-and-one gave San Diego a 7-0 lead with 12:14 left in the second quarter.
  • Marist tied the game at the 8:48 mark of the second period thanks to a 17-yard touchdown pass from Brock Bagozzi to Trevor Sterry.
  • The Red Foxes took their first lead with 1:23 left until halftime on a 19-yard touchdown run by Amin Woods.
  • On the play after Justin Iaccio recovered a fumble on a dropped punt snap, Bagozzi found Woods for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left in the first half. Marist took a 21-7 halftime lead.
  • With San Diego traveling early in the third quarter, Nick Vecchiarelli intercepted a pass and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown to give Marist a 28-7 lead.
  • Aidan Lehman's 27-yard field goal cut Marist's lead to 28-10 with 4:05 left in the third quarter.
  • Isaiah Smith's 13-yard touchdown reception from Grant Sergent brought the Toreros to within 12 at 28-16 with 12:30 left in the fourth.
  • With 6:47 left, the ball was snapped out of the end zone on a San Diego punt, resulting in a safety and giving Marist a 30-16 lead. This accounted for the game's final points.
 
Stats
  • Marist generated six turnovers, with four fumbles recovered and two interceptions, and had five sacks.
  • Tyler Ruscher had a game-high 12 tackles.
  • Angelo Vokolos registered two-and-a-half sacks, a forced fumble, and had eight tackles.
  • Arthur Pinckney had eight stops.
  • Anthony Comestro and Nick Jackson each had one-and-a-half tackles for loss. Jackson had a sack and a fumble recovery.
  • Tristan Shannon registered 155 all-purpose yards, with 73 on the ground and 82 on kickoff returns, which included a 56-yard run back.
 
Notes
  • This was the first time Marist defeated San Diego in 16 tries, including six games at Tenney Stadium.
  • The six turnovers Marist generated were the most for the Red Foxes since also having six at Presbyterian in 2021.
  • Ruscher's tackle total was a career high.
  • Marist has recovered seven fumbles in the last two weeks.
  • Marist's safety was its first since recording one against Stetson on Sept. 14, 2019.
  • Kyle Coffindaffer forced a fumble on the opening kickoff that Vecchiarelli recovered. Coffindaffer entered the game ranked seventh in the FCS in forced fumbles per game (0.40). It was his third forced fumble of the season.
  • Shannon set a career high for rushing yards. He had a career-long rush of 33 yards and a career-long kickoff return of 56 yards.
 
Records
  • Marist is now 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in the PFL. The Red Foxes have won three straight in league play.
  • San Diego is 1-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.
