SARATOGA, New York - Marist Women's Rowing traveled to Saratoga, NY this past weekend to compete at the Head of the Fish Regatta. The women raced seven crews in four events and more novices were introduced to collegiate racing on a gorgeous fall day!
Â
Our Varsity 8 raced first and consisted of coxswain
Ariana Novero,
Summer Starrett, Gabriele Insero,
Natalia Miklos,
Ashley Surette,
Natalie Ronan,
Avalon Johnson,
Isabel Consavari and
Rebecca Paul. This crew finished 4th of 19 with a time of 12:10.73, behind MIT, Wesleyan, and Cornell. The crew felt that it rowed a good race, but not its best race, which for the time being gives some motivation as we strive for leaving our best row of the year out on the water each weekend as the season progresses. We will work hard at matching up better and rowing with more length as we prep for our final race this week.
We entered our 2nd Varsity 8 into a field of 23 crews. This combination consisted of coxswain
Emma Spiro,
Nora Messer,
Kaleigh Tompkins,
Lillian Iannaccone,
Katie Beichert, Kora Eckelman, Sophie Forster,
Emily Liguori and
Lilly Green. The race result for this boat was 9th with a time of 13:26.36. After a good week of practice where it picked up some speed and gained confidence, we felt that this crew rowed a solid race and still left room to gain more speed as more miles and experience begin to add up.
The Varsity 4s were next and we entered an A, B and C crew. The A boat consisted of coxswain
Carina Pascucci,
Summer Starrett, Gabriele Insero,
Natalia Miklos and
Ashley Surette. This crew finished 1st overall, with a time of 13:57.96 . The B boat placed 9th with a time of 14:48.53 and consisted of coxswain
Rebecca Robinson,
Avalon Johnson,
Natalie Ronan,
Kaleigh Tompkins and
Rebecca Paul. Our C crew was comprised of coxswain
Juliette Savarino,
Sydney Macchia,
Shelby McDougall,
Emily Liguori and Jen Liguori. This crew finished 17th with a time of 15:31.71. All three of our Varsity 4 crews handled the headwind conditions well and finished in the top half of the field of 34 crews. Our top 4 had been excited prior to the race to see how they would fair amongst this field of crews since showing some speed at a race two weeks ago. They rose to the occasion and were able to sneak away with a highly coveted Fish Head Trophy while being chased by Colgate who finished 2nd, URI 3rd and Trinity 4th.
The final crew to race on the day was the Freshman/Novice 8's in which we entered two crews who raced to 16th and 18th place finishes in a field of 22 crews. The A boat finished with a time of 16:02.86 and consisted of coxswain Grace Foley, Gabrielle Deane,
Nora Messer, Sophie Forster, Kora Eckelman, Samantha Stortz, Megan McGowen, Maria Belfakih and Lucia Kennedy. The B lineup finished with a time of 16:36.01 and consisted of coxswain Cara Orcutt,
Sophia Ventosa, Rebecca Rush, Charlotte Lezny, Madeline Buchbaum, Erica Whitty, Jenna Jaffe, Camryn Aprilante and Zofia Iacovitti. Both crews battled down the course into a stiff headwind and learned what working hard together is all about in a strong field of crews. This event concluded another successful day of racing for all of the Marist crews on Fish Creek!

The team is now preparing for its final fall competition which will be a 2000m race at Overpeck Park, NJ on Sunday, November 5th against crews from UConn, FFD, Holy Cross and Villanova.
