NEWARK, New Jersey – The Marist men's cross country team earned a third place finish at the Metropolitan Championships on Saturday.
The Red Foxes' top nine finishers all posted personal-best times at the 8K distance for cross country. Marist was led by Francisco Mendonca, who had a breakthrough effort and a final time of 25:56.79, which was good for 11th place overall.
The Red Foxes fulfilled a season-long goal of having a tight pack with their first five runners, who were separated by just 20.67 seconds. The Red Foxes' second and third runners were Mason Mayer (18th overall, 26:05.83) and Ryan Wisker (21st overall, 26:15.18). Next were Christian Locker (22nd, 26:16.84) and Alexander Pattison (23rd, 26:17.46). It was the first time Mendonca, Locker, and Pattison earned top-five finishes as Red Foxes.
Five of the Red Foxes' nine finishers were freshmen (Mayer, Wisker, Thomas Cavuoto, Matthew Ferreri, Joseph Logan).
Marist returns to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes compete in the IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
