Softball Extends Winning Streak to Seven Before Falling at UMass

Red Foxes Take Game One, Drop Second Contest

AMHERST, Massachusetts – The Marist softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at UMass.
 
The Red Foxes extended their longest winning streak in three years to seven with a 9-3 game one victory, but fell 6-5 in game two.
 
Game One
  • Marist scored in the top of the first as Maddie Pleasants' sacrifice fly brought home Peyton Pusey.
  • Chloe Whittier's two-run homer in the bottom of the first put UMass up 2-1.
  • Marist took the lead for good with a three-run top of the third.
  • The Red Foxes had another three-run inning in the fifth. Shea Walsh had a two-run double, and Haley Ahr had a sacrifice fly.
  • The Red Foxes added two more runs on an error in the sixth.
  • Pusey and Sam Freeland each scored three runs. Pusey was 3-for-4, while Freeland was 2-for-3.
  • Walsh and Alyssa Grupp each went 2-for-4.
  • Calista Phippen tossed a five-hitter and struck out four.
 
Game Two
  • UMass opened the scoring with two runs in the first and added one in the second.
  • Maddie Pleasants' RBI single brought home Shea Walsh with the Red Foxes' first run in the top of the third.
  • In the fourth, Freeland's first collegiate home run – an inside-the-park one to left-center – brought home Ronni Howard and Walsh, which put Marist up 4-3.
  • UMass scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, but Walsh's RBI single brought home Pusey with the tying run in the top of the sixth.
  • Taylor Richardson's homer in the bottom of the seventh won it for UMass.
 
On The Day
  • Freeland finished the doubleheader with four runs scored and three RBIs.
  • Pusey scored four runs.
  • Walsh drove in three runs and scored twice.
 
Records
  • Marist is 17-20.
  • UMass is 12-22.
