Marist Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Manhattan

Myers Pitches One-Hitter, Brock Homers in Game Two

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Manhattan on Monday.

The Red Foxes dropped the first game 2-1 but responded in a big way with a 9-0 win after five innings in game two. Maddie Pleasants had a team-best three hits on the day. The Marist pitching staff of Calista Phippen and Kiley Myers combined for 11 strikeouts and just one walk on the day.

Game One
  • Manhattan opened the scoring with a solo home run to lead off the top of the fifth inning by Megan Hedlund.
  • In the top of the sixth the Jaspers used three hits and one Marist error to add another run.
  • Haley Ahr led off the bottom of the sixth with a double for the Red Foxes. Maddie Pleasants followed that up with an RBI double to get Marist on the board and make it 2-1.
  • Sam Freeland, Haley Ahr, Maddie Pleasants, Reese Wilson, and Shea Walsh each got a hit for the Red Foxes.
  • Calista Phippen went the distance, struck out five, and walked just one. She scattered six hits, struck out five, and one of the two runs she allowed was unearned
 
Game Two
  • The Red Foxes erupted for a seven-run second inning. 
  • Maddie Pleasants drew a walk to start the inning. Alyssa Grupp followed that with a double down the left field line and Reese Wilson reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Marist to score its first run.
  • After Shea Walsh drew a walk, Isabella Manory hit a two-run single to left center to give the Red Foxes a 3-0 advantage.
  • After runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball, Peyton Pusey stepped up to the plate and launched a two-RBI double to right center.
  • The offensive barrage continued as Sam Freeland hit a single to left field and then stole second base before Haley Ahr hit a two-RBI single to make it 7-0.
  • Marist added two more runs in the third inning. Manory hit a single through the right side and Hannah Brock crushed a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right field.
  • Manory was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Pusey, Ahr, and Brock drove in two runs each.
  • Kiley Myers allowed just one hit while striking out six and not walking any. She needed just 51 pitches for her complete game.
Records
  • Marist is now 23-26 overall and 10-6 in the MAAC.
  • Manhattan is 10-34 overall and 5-11 in the MAAC.

  • Marist's non-conference games at Lafayette on Wednesday were canceled.
  • The Red Foxes will now return to action on Friday for a MAAC doubleheader at Iona. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
