Marist Walks Away Victorious in Second Straight Match

Newblatt Tallies Season-high Stats Across the Board in 3-0 Victory Over Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist Volleyball team defeated Rider in dominant fashion Wednesday night. This result comes as the second straight sweep victory at home for the Red Foxes.

 
Recap
  • The first set began closely, though it did not take the Red Foxes long to begin creating distance between themselves and their opponents on the scoreboard.
  • Roughly a quarter of the way through the first set and with score tied 5-5, Marist took six of the next seven points,marking the home team's first real display of domination of the night.
  • Despite a late surge from the Broncs, Sasha van der Merwe nullified their efforts with a kill to take the first set 25-23.
  • The second set saw the pace of action continue with both teams often trading blows with  one another. Yet again, the Red Foxes went on a streak to pull ahead 15-12.
  • A service error from Rider ended the second set 25-21 in favor of Marist.
  • The third set saw a much more skewed stat line, with Marist taking control early, with the scoreboard reading 10-4 in favor of the home team.
  • The set & match eventually came to a close as a result of six straight points by Marist. Cecilia "CC" Potter-Pessoa ended the night with her second service ace of the match closing out the third set 25-18.
 
Stats
  • Jordan Newblatt set several season highs with 16 kills, nine digs, and three assists.
  • Sasha van der Merwe recorded another double-double with 13 kills and 11 assists.
  • Claire Lewis' 36 assists on the night grants her the highest average for number of assists per set (with min. 5:00/set) in the MAAC.

  • Quinnipiac comes to town to play the Red Foxes in their third straight home match. The match is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
  • The Red Foxes will then host Fairfield on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
