EMMITSBURG, Md. – Redshirt sophomore
Lexie Tarul scored a career-high 14 points to push Marist women's basketball past MAAC foe Mount St. Mary's, 45-44, Thursday evening inside Knott Arena.
Zaria Shazer added 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Morgan Lee contributed eight to help Marist earn its third MAAC victory in a row.
With the victory, Marist improves to 5-11 on the campaign and 3-3 in the MAAC, while Mount St. Mary's falls to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play on the 2023-24 season.
FIRST QUARTER
The Red Foxes got off to a hot start, jumping out to an early 9-4 lead into the media timeout midway through the frame.
However, after Marist extended the lead to 11-4, the Mountaineers responded with an 8-3 run to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 14-12 entering the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
Mount St. Mary's opened the second quarter with a 5-1 run to push ahead 17-15 before a Marist 5-0 run capped by a Julia Corsentino three-pointer from the corner forced a timeout from the Mount.
Both sides went cold during the final 6:30 of the half, taking a 21-21 tie into the locker room at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
The Red Foxes struck first in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 9-5 run to take a 30-26 advantage into the media timeout.
However, the Mount responded with a 9-2 run of their own to close the third quarter, carrying a 35-32 lead over the Red Foxes into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Mount St. Mary's opened the fourth with a swift 5-0 run, forcing a Marist timeout down eight with 6:54 left in regulation. Out of the timeout, Marist responded with a swift 5-0 run of their own to trim the deficit down to 40-37, forcing a timeout from Mount St. Mary's with 5:12 remaining in regulation.
After falling behind 44-41, Tarul drained a three-pointer to knot the game at 44 with 1:22 left in the contest.
Marist got a stop on defense and then drew a shooting foul, where Zaria Shazer went to the line to put the Red Foxes up one with 42 seconds left on the clock. Marist held the Mount scoreless the rest of the way, taking a 45-44 victory on the road.

- The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20 when Marist continues MAAC play at home against Fairfield.
