Men’s Soccer Set For MAAC Semifinal Match Against Iona

Red Foxes Look To Reach MAAC Championship Match For First Time Since 2021

NEW ROCHELLE, New York- The Marist men's soccer team is slated for its appearance in the MAAC semifinal round against top-seeded Iona, Thursday afternoon. The Red Foxes comes off a dominating 2-1 win against Quinnipiac in a MAAC quarterfinal match.

The match is slated for 1 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.
 
Last Time Out
  • The Red Foxes won a thrilling quarterfinal match against Quinnipiac, on the road, 2-1 on Nov. 10.
  • Arion Ulaj started the scoring in the 18th minute of the match with his third goal of the season, which was assisted by Kyle Evans. The Red Foxes were put ahead early 1-0 against the Bobcats.
  • The Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead into the half, dominating the offensive front. The Red Foxes out-shot the Bobcats 10-0 in the first half.
  • Richard Morel scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 58th minute of the match on a penalty kick. The goal marked Morel's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
  • The goalkeeper duo of Jamie Lowell and Dreni Idrizi made three saves apiece in the win, combining for six total saves.

  • The Red Foxes had five selections to All-MAAC teams for impressive 2024 regular seasons.
  • Chris Verheul was honored with a First Team All-MAAC selection for a dominant freshman campaign at the midfield position.
    • Verheul started in all 17 matches for the Red Foxes, scoring four goals and recording one assist on the season.
  • Richard Morel was selected as a Second Team All-MAAC member for an impressive 2024 regular season.
    • Morel started in 15 matches, playing in all 17, for the Red Foxes. Morel has recorded a team-high seven goals so far this season and tallied three assists.
  • A trio of Red Foxes were selected to Third Team All-MAAC for their outstanding 2024 regular seasons.
  
Scouting Iona
  • The Gaels come off a MAAC quarterfinal match win against eighth-seeded Mount St. Mary's 3-0 on Nov. 10.
    • Three different Gaels scored goals in the win.
  • In their last match, the Red Foxes fell to the Gaels 1-0 during the regular season on Oct. 23.
  • The Gaels had five selections to All-MAAC teams for the 2024 regular season.
  • The top-seeded Gaels finished with a 9-4-3 overall record and a 6-1-1 MAAC record.
  • Player to watch: Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez.
    • Fernandez has started in 16 matches for the Gaels, leading the team in goals (nine) and in points with 21.
