POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The top-seeded Marist softball team was defeated by fourth-seeded Canisius 5-1 on Thursday in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at Gartland Field.

This was the Red Foxes' first loss in the double-elimination format. Marist must win two games each of the next two days to win the championship.

• The Golden Griffins capitalized on two Marist errors to get on the board first, bringing home one run in the top of the first.
• Isabella Manory led off the bottom of the second by crushing her first home run of the season, tying the score at 1-1.
• Canisius used three hits in the top of the third to add another run.
• Megan Giese hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth, extending the Golden Griffin's lead to 3-1.
• Canisius capitalized on another Marist error to add one more run in the top of the fifth.
• Two more errors by the Red Foxes in the top of the seventh allowed Canisius to bring another run home, making it 5-1.
