Clay Fields III Signs Contract with Indianapolis Colts

Fields Becomes Fourth Marist Football Player to Sign NFL Contract

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Clay Fields III, who played football at Marist from 2018-22, has signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

Fields had participated in in the Colts' veteran and rookie mini-camps on a tryout basis before signing a contract on Thursday.

In 2021, Fields was named a Third Team Football Championship Subdivision All-American by The Associated Press. That season, he tied for the Pioneer Football League lead with five interceptions, and he added five pass break-ups and 59 tackles.

Fields was then named All-PFL as both a defensive back (First Team) and return specialist (Second Team) in 2022. In a win at Stetson, he scored two touchdowns in a span of 89 seconds late in the fourth quarter. His 89-yard punt return gave Marist the lead for good, and his 70-yard interception return sealed the Red Foxes' victory. Fields was a captain on Marist's 2022 team.

In his five years with the Red Foxes, Fields tallied 169 tackles, 20 passes defensed, seven interceptions, and five tackles for loss. He played the 2023 season at Chattanooga.

Fields is the fourth Marist football player in history to sign a contract with an NFL team:
  • Michael Rios signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. He then signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2014.
  • Terrence Fede was the first Red Fox selected in the NFL Draft when he was chosen in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins in 2014. Fede played for Miami from 2014-17. He then signed contracts with the Buffalo Bills (2018) and New York Giants (2019).
  • Jason Myers has played in the NFL for the last nine seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2015-17), New York Jets (2018), and Seattle Seahawks (2019-present).
