POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist University men's basketball team earned a 93-61 victory over Vassar in its home opener on Wednesday night at McCann Arena.
The Red Foxes won their second straight, and now stand at 2-1 this season.
- Vassar jumped out to an early 7-6 lead, but Marist took the lead for good thanks to a 9-0 run.
- A three-pointer by Martin Kawa gave Marist a 17-point lead, its largest of the first half, at 32-15 with 9:16 to play.
- Vassar got within nine with 4:08 left in the half, but Marist closed the half on a 9-2 run and led 47-31 after 20 minutes.
- Marist started the second half on an 11-2 run to extend its lead to 25. This spurt included six points from Elijah Lewis and five from Justin Menard.
- A 10-0 Marist run extended the Red Foxes' lead to 34 with 9:06 to go.
- A Ricky McKenzie three with 2:27 to go gave Marist its largest lead at 38 before the Brewers scored the last six points of the game.
- Five Red Foxes scored in double digits. Menard led the way with 16, followed by Rhyjon Blackwell (14), Lewis (12), Jaden Daughtry (10), and Jordan Gabriel (10).
- Myles Parker led Marist with seven rebounds.
- Marist shot .545 (36-for-66) from the field, .462 (12-for-26) from three-point range, and .900 (9-for-10) from the free-throw line.
- The Red Foxes had 24 assists on their 36 field goals, led by Blackwell with six.
- Vassar's Avery Lee led all scorers with 20.
- Marist's 93 points were its most in head coach John Dunne's eight-year tenure.
- Marist's 24 assists were the Red Foxes' most since also having 24 at The Citadel on Dec. 1, 2017.
- Menard's 16 points were a career high.
- Blackwell set a career high with six assists.
- Marist is now 7-1 in home openers under John Dunne, with six straight wins.
- Marist hosts Harvard on Sunday, Nov. 16.
- Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
- The game will be the back end of a split-admission doubleheader with the women's basketball team, who will host Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
