Women's Rowing Wraps St. Joe's Invite

OVERPECK, NJ - Marist women's rowing traveled to Overpeck Park in Ridgefield, NJ, for the St. Joe's Invitational to race crews from Boston College, Bucknell, George Washington, SJU, UConn, UMass, and URI. Thank you, SJU, for hosting!

The 1st Varsity 8+ consisted of coxswain Ariana Novero, Abby Deane, Gabrielle Insero, Summer Starrett, Lillian Iannaccone, Sophie Forster, Megan McGowan, Natalie Ronan, and  Kaleigh Tompkins.

The 2nd Varsity 8+ consisted of coxswain Rebecca Robinson, Amelia Nelson, Anna Fedders, Jessica Zygmunt, Kora Eckelman, Samantha Stortz, Shelby McDougall, Jennifer Liguori, and Emily Liguori.

The Varsity 4+ consisted of coxswain Grace Foley, Nora Messer, Lilly Green, Elizabeth Klik, and Sofia Renals.
The 2nd Varsity 4+ consisted of coxswain Juliette Savarino, Stella McGinty, Caitlin Bartman, Sydney Macchia, and Elisa Huget.
The 3rd Varsity 8+ for the morning race consisted of coxswain Brooke Dini, Gianna Angelucci, Ella Manion, Anna Iannucci, Sofia Renals, Elizabeth Klik, Ashleigh Coyne, Elena Waldbillig, and Gabrielle White.

The first series of races pitted the four A10 schools, GW, St. Joe's, UMass, and URI, against each other in each event to aid in conference championship seedings later this spring. Marist faced BC, Bucknell, and UConn in each event, except the 1st/2nd Varsity 4, where Bucknell did not have boat crews for this event. UConn also could not get their 1V, and 2V boated for the first races of the day. The results of the morning races were as follows:
  • 1st Varsity 8+ Results: BC 6:53.925, Bucknell 6:56.578, Marist 7:08.356
  • 2nd Varsity 8+ Results: BC 7:11.334, Bucknell 7:12.801, Marist 7:24.319
  • 1st Varsity 4+ Results: BC 7:54.692, UConn 7:56.725, Marist 8:16.686
  • 2nd Varsity 4+ Results: BC 8:08.980, UConn  8:17.284, Marist 8:29.708
  • 3rd Varsity 8+ Results: Bucknell 7:05.433, BC 7:11.470, UConn 7:25.828, Marist 7:48.559
In the afternoon 1V8+ race, UConn jumped off the line at the start and developed a decent lead for the first 500m, but every crew kept in the fight and were pushing each other. There was overlap across all crews throughout the first 1250m of the race, and at that point, GW was up five seats on UMass, Marist was down a seat on UMass, and four seats up on UConn. GW unfortunately hit a submerged log, lost their skeg, and veered towards UMass. Both crews had to come to a complete stop, and no time was given for either crew. Our Red Foxes didn't let this shake them and ended the race up a length on UConn. We were disappointed that we didn't know what the finish of this epic race was, but we are glad that all rowers and coxswains from GW and UMass were okay.

Results: Marist 7:14.155, UConn 7:18.821

In the afternoon 2V8+ race, UConn could also pop off the line and get ahead off the start, with Marist and UMass dead even and ahead of the crew from SJU. By the 1000m mark, UMass and Marist were able to walk back on UConn, and the three crews were all within a seat of each other. Putting up a great fight, the Red Foxes finished three seats down on UMass and three seats ahead of UConn.

Results: UMass 7:27.615, Marist 7:28.766, UConn 7:29.967, SJU 7:54.463

The Varsity 4+ had a great race and kept building on their lead throughout the full 2000m race. After some last-minute switches due to illness and injury, we are very proud of how this group stepped up this weekend.

Results: Marist 8:23.654, GW 8:31.137, SJU 8:46.083

The 2nd Varsity 4+ crew also got off to a lead early but never settled or were content with their current lead. Fighting the whole way down the course, this crew executed their race plan and did exactly what they needed to do to race a complete race.

Results: Marist 8:27.051, URI B 8:51.99

The 3rd Varsity 8 were down after the start but didn't let this shake them. They fought back against the crew from GW and finished the race almost a full length ahead.

PM Results: Marist 7:57.8, GW 8:01.71

Coaches' Quote
"Our third weekend of racing provided us with typical northeast spring conditions with moderate crosswind and some intermittent rain showers. The field of crews was very competitive, and our Red Foxes represented themselves well in each event. Today provided two excellent opportunities and each boat felt stronger and faster than last weekend, which is always our goal going into race day each week." - Director of Rowing, Head Coach of Women's Rowing, Tom Sanford
